My son graduates in a couple of weeks from McCormick and I am wondering what the normal dress for the parents and guests is for the Commencement on Friday and the Convocation Saturday morning. I can't find anything that really says. Is it a suit and tie affair or business casual.

Last year our dress for Commencement @ the Stadium: Business casual. Hubby wore nice linen shirt/slacks. I wore dressy slacks and polo shirt (Burberry). VERY glad we did-seats were in the stadium after all. For the Convocation we were dressier. Husband wore suit/tie and I wore suit w/heels.
~Hope this helps~

That helps a lot. Thank You.

We don’t graduate until next year but what’s Commencement and what’s Convocation?

mabrandt~You are welcome!
amtc~I have to be honest…I did not know what the difference was either! However…now I know…The Commencement ceremony is held in the stadium. ALL students enter the football field sectioned by their schools. The parents enter and sit in the stadium seats. We found the seats closest to the left - facing the stage -had the most coverage from the sun throughout the ceremony. During this ceremony, the main speaker (in our case Stephen Colbert) and the different heads of the Administration/Colleges spoke.
The Convocation was when the student received their diploma. It was held in a different place. There were celebration parties hosted by the school (ie-SOC or WCAS or…) Some of those parties were by invitation.
I hope this helps.
