Graduation Dress

Post a pic of a graduation dress or outfit you would want to wear as a 2022 high school or college grad.

Since this is the parents cafe, I think most of us would be better positioned to suggest outfits for the parents of the graduate.

Both. We may get good ideas and share it with our kids too.

Given the heat and that graduation is outdoors here, sundresses are most common choice of graduates and female guests. I wore capris, light blouse, and sandals.

After overthinking this for my daughterā€™s HS and College graduations, I realized it didnā€™t matter at all - nobody saw what was under her cap and gown. All that counted was wearing comfortable shoes (she was on her feet for a long period of time for both occasions).

Same with what I wore, turned out it was freezing for her College graduation and in an arena with many thousands of people nobody looked at what I was wearing. I was just happy to have a heavy jacket on that day for getting around.

HS graduation was the opposite. It was oppressively hot outside that day, but cold in the air conditioned auditorium. Glad I brought a light jacket for inside that day.

My daughterā€™s HS did a safe overnight after graduation party for the entire graduating class. Those kids changed from whatever was under their caps and gowns minutes after the ceremony into comfortable clothes for the party.

I do not tell my graduate what to wear. Goodness, if Iā€™m sending or have sent them off to college hopefully thatā€™s a choice they can make themselves!

Iā€™ll be attending my Dā€™s health professions grad school graduation. Iā€™m a casual athleisure dress/skirt wearer. Iā€™ll be wearing a nuu-muu with a pair of 7/8 tights-leggings and if needed a lightweight sweater over it. https://nuu-muu.com/collections/all-dresses

Today my DD plans on shopping for a dress that can be used both for her service society formal and college graduation. She said she was interested in one at Dillards, so after a quick perusal Iā€™m going to guess she might like this one:

My D is wearing a floral one piece, flow-y, pant suit to her cousinā€™s graduation in June, and I would bet money thatā€™s what sheā€™ll choose to wear under her gown next year if the weather isnā€™t too cold.

Itā€™s similar to this: Yoanna Wide-Leg Jumpsuit | Anthropologie

When I graduated from college almost 40 years ago, I wore a dark, floral dress under my black robe. The skies opened up and it poured and we were all soaking wet. Later, the sun came out and I took my robe off so I could dry off. My slip (remember those?) was showing and I couldnā€™t figure out why. My dress was dry-clean only and had shrunk while I was wearing it.

I had one of those graduation days also. It was outside and it rained and the politician speakers just kept on going in the rain while we all got soaked.

Only adviceā€¦wear comfortable shoes.

Re: clothing for the graduateā€¦one of my kids wore a little sundress because it was 90 degrees at college graduationā€¦and the robes were mighty hot.

We live in New England. I wore nice slacks and a silk shirt to my kidsā€™ high school graduations and to one college graduationā€¦because around hereā€¦it can be chilly even in May and June.

In New England you may want layers. It went from hot to cold and windy (20 degree temperature drop) all on the same day for my sonā€™s Tufts graduation!

And an umbrellaā€¦

Never heard of Nuu-Muu. Interesting.

Lol, in our family ā€œinterestingā€ means NOT GOOD.

The Nuu-Muu looks cute, good for layering. It says ā€˜exercise apparelā€™ but seems to have lots of uses. Like the idea of pairing with leggings.

For graduations, my advise is to avoid high heels - they can be awful if you need to trek across lawns. If you want a dressy look, go with nice wedges or flashy flats.

Oh, no! I think itā€™s cute. I have considered adopting the dress-over-leggings look. I think interesting referred to the fact that I am interested in the look!

Our sonā€™s high school didnā€™t use caps/gowns, just dark suits for the boys and white (sun)dresses for the girls. He was in uniform for his college graduation, so he didnā€™t have to think about that one either. I just wore a simple sleeveless to both, white to the HS grad, navy blue to the college grad, both dresses that were already in my closet. No one cares what the parents are wearing.

Dress for the weather, and I second @thumper1ā€™s comment about comfortable shoes.

My D attracts heatwaves; she was born during one and every graduation/step-up ceremony since elementary school took place during one.

She wore really nice dresses, for elementary, middle school and high school. She purchased a really nice dress for her college graduation, but did not wear it. she wore a sundress that she had complete with flip flops and sunglasses. I remember people who were getting their MDs walking across the stage in shorts and Birkenstocks. I guess that made it ok, for her when she graduated from law school again to make sure that her outfit was complete with flip flops and shades.

Since I attend graduation every year for work, my number one item is a pair of comfortable shoes. I ordered a really great dress for this yearā€™s graduation, that is going to be really comfortable, but probably wont wear it if it rains or if it is really humid.

For my kidsā€™ college graduations, I wore comfortable slacks and sone top or other and walking shoes. Also wore appropriate layers of outerwear as the temperature fluctuated, depending on whether you were in sun or shade. S wore dark slacks and a comfortable shirt under his cap & gown. No idea what D wore.
