I'm not really sure how my school does the whole speaker picking thing because academic honors aren't awarded until graduation day... so no valedictorian/salutatorian until grad. day i think. So it might be senior class president, senior class representative (me), and anyone who wants to and is approved I guess. My graduating class is only 35 kids, so it won't be that hard to pick speakers.

...that's INSANE!!!! I can't imagine taking a graduation speech seriously if I was giving it to just 35 kids who I already knew...I mean, d'you guys take all your classes together, or what?

Sorry, I'm just...amazed--I've got a couple more'n 500 kids in my class, so...yeah. Wow.

We don't have valedictorian/saludictorians so I think we vote on speakers. You can get nominated or nominate yourself. But really, seniors can speak in assembly anytime they want and nobody does it. shrug

At my school, the val, sal, student gov't activities branch head-person, principal, and superintendent speak. And there are 100 kids in each class, about 75 of them together since kindergarten, so a lot of the speeches are like, "I remember when the chicks hatched, I remember Colonial Day... D.A.R.E., etc" These speeches are pretty lame, but whatever. As long as they're short.

Do you know what's the worst?

"As we open a new chapter of our lives..."

"I don't want to have a long speech in this stifling heat... (followed by a 15 minute speech)

we dont got no val/sal :( i want to have an interesting speech! ahh nervous haha

we have a whole essay writing/live presentation process. Only 3 people get to speak, I'm going to use ts eliot poem J. Alfred Prufrock and tell the grads to not measure out their lives in spoonfuls but in bucketfulls

Our senior class votes on 2 students to give a speech on graduation night. A few other classmates will speak briefly, but the main speeches come from the 2 with the most votes.

stifling heat, surburbian? where is your graduation? Mine's in a church (not a religious school though, but the church is pretty, and cool)

ours is outdoors =D its hot, close to 100 or so hehe

Usually by the waterfront park (right by the river), and it's sooo pretty! We have it around 7PM, so it's a little before sunset. Then, it's really nice and breezy. Everyone sits on folding wooden chairs. But if it rains, we have the graduation in the auditorium, which is also pretty but there's no air conditioning. And the graduates have to sit onstage, under the stage lights, which makes it extremely hot. And graduation's at the end of June.

Our graduation is always in the football stadium. We have a graduating class of about 500. With all the parents, relatives, etc the crowd is usually about 5000 strong.... last year it was humid and sticky and people were showing sweat stains through their robes by the time it was over.

Our valedictorian and salutatorian are announced halfway through senior year. Those two, the class president, and the class historian always speak at the graduation. I'm only a junior, but I don't look forward to it at all....

Uhm....our graduation got screwed up this year and we might have it in the parking lot. The day before the last day of school. Which would actually be kinda fun, in a really weird way...

Happy 500th post for me! Yay! Now I will just have to tear myself away from CC for the next three days as I have a million and one things due on Monday.

At our school, the 4 sr. class officers speak in addition to the valedictorian and salutatorian. The class officers' speeches are basically "I remember when I was in kindergarten..." because they all have an assigned topic. The val and sal get to speak about whatever they want. Two years ago, the top 2 were best friends, and the sal did a little gentle ribbing at the val's speech. But this year, I have no idea what's going to happen. We have one person at number 1, but right now, there are 3 people tied at number 2! Knowing our school, they'll go down to like gym grades or something (haha i'd win because i rock at gym). We shally see. Maybe we'll just alternate every third word...

Last year we had a tie for Salutatorian. It wasn't a problem... they each gave a speech.

For my graduating class ('06) it looks like we could have as many as 4 salutatorians, though, which will be pretty crazy.

entropicgirl -- It's 35 students, and each is allowed I think 10 guests, so the place gets pretty full; plus, there's faculty, deans, administration, and other students. So although I would be addressing the speech to only a handful of kids, I'd be speaking in front of a whole lot of people (well... a lot of people for my school, at least--I know you other guys probably have HUGE senior classes that would be the same size as my senior class and all the guests).

The other grades are pretty big though--about 45-52 kids. I think I have the smallest graduating class at my school so far (well we're only the fifth graduating class).

So the whole classes thing--we're split up into three sections of about 10-12 kids. We're separated for our core classes (history, english, and science); then we mix it up with underclassmen in math (depending on what math we're in) and other electives; and we're all together for science, history, and english lectures and senior seminar (if we ever actually have it--most of the time it's just a free period, like it was this afternoon).

So yeah. That's my freaking tiny class in a nutshell--which we could probably fit in.

Our school doesn't have valedictorian/salutorian. Apparently (this might be a rumor, but I think its true), a girl who didn't get valedictorian about 15 years ago went and killer herself. So they took off the names to remove competition.

As for our speaking, I'm not sure if there's any order to ours. Two years ago the valedvictorian spoke. Last year, a top 2% girl who was a star speecher gave the speech. I think all the top people are required to write one, and the best one speaks.

Where did I lose a post? I definitely had 500 last time... Well, I failed miserably at trying not to be on CC during the weekend.

I'll be speaking at my graduation as co-valedictorian; I haven't given too much thought to the topic, though. When my sister graduated (also as co-valedictorian) several years ago, the valedictorians and salutatorian had a theme for their speeches (I think one had "Past," another "Present," and the other "Future"), but I don't think it will be that way this year. I'll probably just tell everyone to avoid mediocrity...I doubt they'll take me seriously...:)

what do most graduation speech talk about? like how its great to graduate and stuff?
