Gradute school and summer classes.

If i take a few summer classes during my undergrad at another school, will it hurt my chances of applying to grad school? How do grad schools view this?

Why do you think it would hurt your chances?

I think it's a pretty good idea to stick with one school if you're planning to complete a sequence of courses, since each university's sequence is organized differently. (for example, if you managed to score a really easy version of class "X" at another university, you may not have learned enough to do well in the related class "Y" back at your own.) Summer school classes are usually concentrated in GE requirements and basic classes for given majors (ie, gchem and ochem will be offered, but rarely things like pchem lab) anyway.

I might not be able to graduate on time because i declared my major late. I plan to take a few courses for my concentration at another college.

I am worried that Grad schools will see that i took a couple of classes outside, and see that as something bad.

Why in the world would this be bad?

The only potential problem I could see is if you took the classes at a community college, and members of a graduate admission committee doubted that those classes were of the same caliber of those available at your four-year institution.

(Not that I would necessarily condone such an assumption, but it could possibly happen.)

hmm I'm taking classes at a community college this summer and they're all online since I'm going to a close relatives wedding. I'm only taking one class in the classroom. If I don't take these classes, I can't take any upper level courses in the fall...

I am taking:
College Alg, Bus. Calc, Technical Writing, Art Appreciation for non majors, and Intro to Computers in Business.. I was considering taking a Statistics course but I think I'll just take it next semester now.

Sorry for hijacking ur thread, but do you think it will look bad if I'm taking these courses at a CC during the summer?

I already bought my ticket so I have to go to this wedding and it falls between Summer 1 and Summer2. My uni doesn't allow taking upper level courses until finishing pre-business reqs.

Will all your courses be in session at the same time? Five courses is quite a bit for the summer.

nah one is a 3 wk course.. one is a 5wk course and the other 3 are 10wks. I think all but the bus.comp. course are self paced so I'm going to finish them asap. I've taken online classes before, b/c my brother's wedding happened to be during the semester... so they're not that bad as long as you don't put something off till last minute and the subject isn't hard. I'm good at math so I'm pretty certain I'll do well.

If the credits transfer over, does it state on your transcrpt where you took the other classes?

I believe so. My schools transcripts do.

Did the grades get added in with your GPA, or was it a separate GPA?

The GPA wasn't counted. Only the credit for passing them was given.

you should check with your registrar on all of these things questions. I'm sure there are guidelines written down somewhere. It will vary from school to school.

Graduate schools will usually request transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended. So regardless of what your current school includes on its transcript, grad schools will know where you have taken all your classes. I'm not saying that's a negative thing.

so is it not a bad thing to take summer classes at a cc.. im sure most students do.

I think it depends how crucial the classes you take are for your field of study. If you're an English major, for example, who took organic chemistry at the local CC to fulfill a science requirement, I doubt anyone would care. If you're a chemistry major, however, who took organic outside of your primary institution, that would send red flags up. It looks like you're just taking these classes to fill some distribution requirements, so it shouldn't be a problem.
