summer school at a state school for undergrad

Hi all,
I'm considering taking a class at a state school instead of my home school this summer, for financial reasons. The class is for a distribution/GE credit.
Usually, I've read from other sources that doing so may be a good GPA boost and I wouldn't have to work too hard to get rid of the requirement. However, online reviews suggest that the professor on the course I want to take is actually quite challenging.

I still want to go for the class, and of course try to do my best, but i suppose my ultimate question is: If I take a summer class at a "lesser" school, and then DON'T get a good grade, how bad will it look to grad school? Is it worth the risk?

You’re overthinking this. One grade in one class is not going to be the difference between admit/deny.

First, if you take a single course at another school, it usually is not factored into your GPA at your undergraduate institution. Second, I agree with Polarscribe – one class isn’t going to make or break your application. Third, you’ll have to send the transcript from the state college separately.

Many students do what you’re doing. It’s not a big deal.
