I made grammatical mistakes while writing my college supplements. They were not even grammatical mistakes. Instead, I just left some words out or added irrelevant words. E.g I left out the word “of” from “management of water resources”. A made a couple of such errors. Would they have any sort of effect?
Well, they won’t help. If you’re borderline, it could make a difference.
They were’nt e.g in the entire 7 Columbia supplements, I made only one mistake and that was the one aforementioned one.
Made 1 in the 4 Rice supplements where I added “that” where it was not relevant. And similarly made another one in Northwestern. It wasn’t like I made 3-4 errors in one Supplement.
This question literally comes up hundreds of times each year. It’s not a big deal. If colleges, including Columbia, rejected every applicant with a minor typo/word omission on an essay, they would not be able to fill their class. If there were numerous errors, that might be different.
Chill. Read the “clam fart” thread here. He was accepted.
Well this honestly helps.
Do take it as a lesson, though. Try to be more careful in the future. Employers have told me that they immediately discard any resumes that have typos or grammatical errors. If people can’t be careful with their resumes, how will they perform on a day-to-day basis?
Well if college confidential is being so responsive today, I have another critical question. I was scheduled to take the ACT on december 9. It got delayed and wasnt rescheduled until today when they mailed me that it has been rescheduled on the 13th. I told colleges in my add info this entire episode and told them that I was expecting it to be rescheduled in January and will report them scores as soon as I recieve them. I’ve already taken the SAT but the score is on the lower side(1490). Will colleges accept my scores?
The score is on the lower side considering the colleges that I am targeting.
It’s up to the individual college. However, since Columbia will accept February scores, it’s not an issue for them. For your other schools, you’ll have to check with each - there is no blanket answer, but if any college accepts February scores, it should be fine.
What if I send an update from the common app of my new score when it comes out?
It won’t matter; if they will consider the late scores, colleges will still want the score report and if they won’t accept late scores, well, then sending an update just wastes everyone’s time.
I agree with @skieurope do not send scores. But if you have an achievement that is substantial, one should convey that.
@atfrostedcake, Please accept this criticism in the manner it is intended; to help you. Take extra care in all your written communications. A few of your entries within this thread are a little hard to follow. I only mention this as your initial post spoke of grammatical errors, missing words, etc.
1490 is a great score. Clearly it demonstrates your ability in those areas, including writing. I know many today view message boards, email, and text platforms as informal platforms to communicate ideas. Unfortunately, grammar and spelling fall by the wayside. Don’t assume a reader ignores that. In professional life, and in dealing with college professors, you will find it to be quite important.
As another poster put it, some employers won’t consider an applicant if their resume is sloppy. It’s not an indication of intelligence, but rather of how one represents themselves. Employers care a lot about that.
Best of luck!
You’d better not make any grammatical errors
One mistake in a college app, assuming its not grammatical ignorance, is an error, a typo, maybe a download hiccup. After that, don’t count on any favors. Top colleges give a hoot about how you present, the savvy and care.
Know that, by the time new scores arrive in Feb, your app may already be reviewed a few times and impressions made. The question could be, with a reach list, why were you counting on a last minute December retake? It feels last minute. It is last minute.
