Grammatical Errors

Hi, guys.

I just realised that I made a few grammatical mistakes in some of my essays and with decision around the corner, I can't help but freak out.

A few errors:

While editing, I accidentley erased the capitalised words in the following phrases: "I AM committed..." and " With the aid OF the..."

in one essay, wrote indistinguishable in place of distinguishable.

Will stupid mistakes like these have a negative bearing on my already average application? :/

As much as I hate to let you down, I would guess yes, your chances at those schools are pretty much shot unless they are a safety school like Arizona State, or a performing arts school that bases decisions on auditions / portfolio reviews.

Did you apply to any schools where you didn’t make those mistakes?

I’m going to be honest, I had a grammatical error in my Georgetown essay and I was waitlisted there. I attend Swarthmore now.

Was it because of the essay alone? Probably not. But I think it could have been that in conjunction with the fact that I demonstrated about 0 interest and had a not so great interview. But who knows?

It could hurt, but I’m not so sure. The adcoms are piling through tens of thousands of essays. Considering the time pressure, it’s possible that a couple of mistakes just might slip through. Also I think the main purpose of the essay is to gauge the candidate as a person. A personable and energetic essay with a couple of errors should be superior to one that is garmmatically flawless but dull and lifeless.
