My son is an OOS student going to UNC next year. He is trying to decide between Granville and South Campus. I had heard that more of the OOS students live on South Campus. Does anyone have any insights to help him make the right choice.

Rather than try to repeat all that as been said before, I recommend that you use the advanced search function and search for thread titles containing "Granville". You will find a variety of opinions, though the consensus seems to be that South Campus would be the better choice.

Yes, check back through the threads, there's been much discussion on this topic. My H lived in Granville some 25 yrs ago, and wanted our D to follow in her Dad's footprints. We questioned many students, and recent grads and decided that Granville was not best for her. From the opinions we got, some from kids who lived in Granville and some from kids who lived on campus, it seems that Granville is much like it was back in H's days there. Mostly IS, many kids who are pledging Greeks, or already Greek, awaiting housing in their frat. or sorority. My H was in a frat. and loved it, but D is not a "party animal" like her old man, and has no desire to go greek. Granville backs up to one of the frat. courts, so it is easy to get involved in that. D is a freshman and lives on North Campus; it has been a very good enviroment for her. There is a good mix of IS and OOS on her hall, and it is pretty quiet, something D enjoys. There are very few freshmen on her hall however, and that has been her main complaint. She has many friends on south campus (some from H.S. and some she's met this year) and most have loved it and made many new friends, both IS and OOS. Most freshmen do live on south campus so it seems to be much easier for most to make friends. That being said, most of D's friends are trying to move to north campus next year because they've had enough of the party atmosphere and long walk to classes.

is it easy to go greek while in the south campus?

I wouldn't recommend Granville, but if south campus seems unappealing then why not check out north or middle? All are good options.

i would, hands down, live in North because it's aesthetically appealing but from what I heard of is that it's not very sociable and doesn't compare to South.
Any thoughts on Middle?

Middle is okay as far as I know. South is where most of the freshmen are and therefore is more sociable since everyone is looking to meet new people.

If you're an OSSer, I wouldn't recommend Granville. The stereotype (there are exceptions of course) is that it's the party, in-state, Greek, rich building.

Does middle compare to the south in social terms?

Given the sheer number of rooms on South campus, you will probably end up there. Most freshmen love it there because there are so many similar students. North can be isolating for freshmen--although very convenient. Some that end up on North, wish they were at south bc you can walk, its NOT far and Ram's head is a very social dining hall for freshmen. Middle is great but filled wiht learning communities. Being in a dorm that small with a learning community, and NOT being in that group can really limit your social options.

The south campus dorms for the most part have built in dressers and closets. The north don't. that in itself makes the room bigger. You share a bathroom with just your suite as opposed to the whole hall.

you share a bathroom with the hall in the south, whereas you share the bathroom only with the suite in the north, correct?
So....what are the best places to live in the South and Middle?

danny - the opposite is true. South has a lot of suite-styled dorm rooms. North is mostly historic dorms that have hall baths.

what dorms are suite styled dorms and are sociable as well in south campus?
