Hi,
I will be attending Syracuse University, but I am stuck on which program to pursue in Graphic Design, BS or BFA. I don’t really understand the difference. What I know is GD in BFA is more toward “art” and BS is more toward “academic/business”
If you could share with me your experience on what GD degree you have that will be great! How will BS and BFA affect a career in seeking jobs?
I was thinking of combining GD and business, so that will be BS. But I also want the skill set in GD like using Adobe programs because that’s what I want to do…
At Syracuse, the main difference is that Graphic Design is in the Newhouse School of Communications, and the BFA in Communications Design is in the school of Visual and Performing Arts. Much of the difference in the two degrees is the % of classes in your major vs. classes in other areas of the university. I don’t remember the exact percentages, but a BFA would be similar to going to a straight art school, while a BS will have liberal arts requirements and more flexibility for things like a minor, double major, or just elective classes.
Here are two pages that outline the curriculum for each program
