Graphic design or communication design?

I'm planning on applying to FIT. I'm confident with having a major either in communication design or graphic design. Should I take the 4 year bachelors degree for GD or should I start with 2 years of communication design (associates degree) then continue on to graphic design? Thank you! Really hoping I get into FIT!

Well first there are no 4 year degrees at FIT, they do two year degrees only (so your first two years are AAS and the last 2 years would be for your BFA). So if you want to go for Graphic Design its an upper division program which is BFA. So that means you have to complete Communication Design Foundation (AAS) first to get into upper division programs (BFA) like Graphic Design.

Like right now I’m in their Communication Design Foundation program and when I get into my 4th semester which is my last year in Communication Design Foundation AAS, I have to pick and apply to their BFA programs. Which for the program I’m in is Advertising Design, Graphic Design, Packaging Design or Visual Presentation and Exhibition Design. Also to get into the BFA programs you have to create a second portfolio from all the work you did in Communication Design and do a portfolio session to get into your BFA (so save all your work).

The the four programs I just said before are the programs you can move into after your AAS in Communication Design Foundation. But I heard you don’t have to pick from theses 4 if you want to go into something else. Say if you want to go into Illustration or Fine Art for your BFA. But its not as easy because you take Communication Design to move into theses 4 specific programs, but it can be done.

Good Luck!

Thank you so much for your reply!

Do you have any tips for the portfolio (for when you applied to FIT)? I’m stressing out a lot because of it. I feel like if I don’t have a really good portfolio they won’t accept me. My grades are good, SAT score is kinda low (1330), and I have nothing on my portfolio. Again, thank you so much if you reply!
