GRE-Quant scores for History majors?

Hey, I'm currently in the process of applying to some history programs at some top tier (as far as history is concerned) schools - University of Chicago, and University of Illinois, to name a few.

My question is, what is a good quant score for a history major? I took the test once before, and got a 630 on verbal, and only a 500 on the quant, and a 5 on the essay. I have no clue where these scores fit in. Most programs that I am applying to have not provided a range of scores that most applicants fall into, and when I have asked what sort of scores are acceptable, I get the standard, "THE GRE IS ONLY PART OF THE BLAH BLAH BLAH...."

So, where do I stand exactly? I go to a relatively small school, my GPA is 3.9, I have (what I consider to be) a very strong writing sample, a strong statement of purpose, a good resume for an undergrad, and some great letters of recommendation. I'm also taking the GRE again in a few days-should I really stress over it? I know the test is important, but could it sink my application?

It probably depends a lot on the type of history you wish to pursue. If your methodology isn't stats-heavy, then it probably isn't that big of a deal. Most programs that I've found don't list average GRE scores. According to Berkeley, their averages are 96th percentile verbal, 71st percentile quantitative, and 5.42 writing. Averages for the University of Maryland are 91st percentile verbal, 53rd percentile quantitative, and 74th percentile analytical. I'd guess that U Chicago's averages are more similar to Berkeley, and U Illinois' are more similar to UMD. I don't know if this helps.

Thanks. I'm looking into Modern European history, so I don't think quant should come into play. I've been told that one of the programs that I had considered applying to doesn't even consider quants; too bad I didn't pursue that one!
