Great colleges, great fit?

I already posted this in the Yale forum :)

However, I thought it'd be more appropriate to post this here because I'd love to get some feedback over my chances at the prospective schools I am applying to. I certainly wouldn't want to waste time and money over applying to a school I absolutely have no chance at, or would be unhappy at.

I'm a little apprehensive about this entire process - I really want to just apply to all of my reach schools, however, I know my pragmatic parents will protest against the ridiculous application fees (they really do add up). I'm trying to skim down my list, cut out the fat, and maybe add some necessary, but unexpected, spice into it. Whatever you'd like to offer, I'd just appreciate a response! :)

I think it'd be important to note that I'm definitely a girl who would flourish in a thriving college scene so most of the colleges I'm applying to are in vibrant college towns! I also want to study humanities during my undergraduate years, and then, hopefully matriculate into a medical school for graduate studies. :D

** My colleges: **

Fordham, Northeastern, Tulane, Boston College, Claremont McKenna, Barnard, Northwestern, UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, Rice, Duke, and Yale.

Yale is my ultimate dream school, however I know the likelihood of getting in is against me. But, nothing is going to deter me from applying there! :)

I've also already applied to the UC's and I'm pretty much have my mind set on applying to Northwestern, Fordham, Tulane, and Northeastern. Advice about the remaining schools would be helpful! (Do I have too many reaches, too many safeties, not enough matches, etc.?)

So, onto my stats...

Teacher Recommendation 1: AP Calc AB teacher who loves me! Not sure if he's the greatest writer but I tutor his struggling kids whenever I come in to say hi... and I skipped a week of school right before AP tests to go on the Korea trip and came back and aced the AP Calc AB test! (He prepared us really well.)
Teacher Recommendation 2: Choice between my AP Lit/Journalism teacher or my honors English teacher from junior year. Love them both! :)
Counselor Rec: I get a feeling of apathy from her... I can guarantee it's not going to be stellar.

You seem to have a pretty good mix of reaches/matches/safeties. I don’t think you have anything that’s going to keep you out of Yale, Rice, Duke, the top UCs, or Northwestern, but I’m not sure you have something that would give you a very high chance at those schools, either (although obviously Yale and Duke will be more difficult than the others). But you have good stats, so as far as I know, you would be at least considered for all of those schools – although ECs and SATs might keep you out of Yale and Duke. You seem to have enough safeties/matches that you’d definitely get in somewhere, though. I think Barnard might be a (high?) match, and it’s a great school, so if I were you I’d probably apply.

Have you thought about University of Chicago? If you can write a creative essay for them, it could be a high match.

Hi tarmiriel! Thanks for the response! Mmm that was a little disappointing to hear about Yale - but of course, I expected it. Haha, unfortunately, I think I’ll be taking Barnard off my list. My mom made it very clear that she doesn’t want me applying there because it’s an all girls school… (I don’t mind, but she clearly does.)

Yes, I’ve thought about UChicago! I actually very much wanted to apply there at the beginning of the application season, but after more research, it sounded like the school is more research focused. I really like Yale (tbh, the only one I extensively researched) because it offers both outstanding research and art programs. But, of course, correct me if I’m wrong.

Both of my friends at Chicago are music majors, and they seem to love it. I know it also has a good theater department. But yeah, it might be more focused on research.

Definitely apply to Yale though – you’re within range, and you never know! I know two people who applied a few years ago, both of whom had lower SATs and only one of whom had a remotely existent EC list (and it wasn’t even that prestigious or anything), and they both got waitlisted and one of them then got in. Top schools do weird things a lot of the time. I’m just hoping Yale will also do weird things in terms of me…

Thanks for that. I’ll definitely look into UChicago more now! :)

Your comment about Yale both made me hopeful and abysmal… And I completely feel the same way! You really never know…
