I am looking for schools where I have a decent shot at getting merit aid scholarships at this point. I am obviously not qualified for any merit aid scholarships before any priority deadline, so I am screwed there. Hopefully, someone will be able to direct me to a school that really emphasizes those CR +M scores. I already looked at those automatic tuition colleges already btw.
I am already applying to UIUC, CMU (SCS), UCB EECS, UCLA, UCSD, Rice and some ivies. I know I am not getting ANY merit scholarships from these places.
On a side note, does anyone know how hard UIUC is for OOS merit aid? I am applying to UIUC for CS.
The problem is I didn’t tell any of my teachers that I would apply early action (UIUC didn’t require one) and I figure it’s too late now unless UMD has a separate deadline for those.
@mom2collegekids
My parents will pay a considerable amount, still need to ask for specifics. I am in-state for UCB. My full safety is San Jose University.
@Defeat, you don’t have teacher recommendations yet? Then it is too late, as giving only 4 days notice to a teacher probably won’t work. If you haven’t asked anyone yet, please ask asap for any regular decision schools that require one or two.
Thanks for the concern, but I already have asked my teachers for letters of recommendation. It is just that I never specified that I would apply early to any schools except UIUC which doesn’t require one.
On a side-note, if I do apply RD for UMD, am I still considered for any other worthy scholarships? Thanks!
Sorry! I missed this post. I took a look. Do you know how competitive it is to get this scholarship? Is it mainly looking at test scores or ECs or something else? Also, how is Marist in terms of computer science? Are there many research/internship opportunities? Thanks!
@Defeat Marist is great for Computer Science! We are a very technologically advanced college. Students have access to state of the art equipment while learning on campus in addition to so many internships opportunities that there are almost more internships available than students to fill them! Marist has a close relationship with IBM which led to the IBM joint study program. This gives the computer science students experiences inside the classroom and internship and career experience as well. I go to Marist and I have many friends that study computer science who love their classes and professors.
@Defeat Northeastern and BU come to mind. They both offer merit without a separate application - to top students (which you are). Both have excellent CS departments.
Cool, I looked into Grinnell and did some research. Looks like a promising department and going to add that to my list. Do you like specify what financial aid that you’d like to receive and then that becomes a factor for admission or something? I see people on the RD thread that mention that they applied for high financial aid and that was the reason they were rejected (they had stats higher than mine)
Thanks! Looked at both of these colleges and they do offer pretty generous merit aid. Definitely adding these two on my list. Hopefully I can get some awesome merit aid offers.
If you get your UMD application in by the deadline they might consider it even if teacher recommendations are late. Worth a shot. Re: Grinnell. It is need blind admission except for international students so I suspect that the people who said they were rejected because of high financial aid were international.
I realize this thread is a bit old, but I’ll give my solution (to many problems on CC): Take a Gap Year! Don’t take any classes for college credit, work, earn money, reapply to colleges in the summer at a leisurely pace.
