Hi, I am interested in the University of Delaware and wanted to know about their Greek Life. Does greek life have a major role at the school? Is there any sorority hazing?? and how would you rank the sororities? Thank you!
You can check out the Greek Life website at UD at: http://www.udel.edu/greek/. Approximately 20% of the students participate in Greek Life so it is fairly big on campus. Under UD’s Code of Conduct most all forms of hazing are prohibited (check out the Code of Conduct on UD’s website for specifics). In fact it is a violation of the UD Code of Conduct for a student to even allow themselves to be hazed. Ranking sororities is certainly a matter of personal perspective so I would prefer not to provide a specific ranking of the sororities but if you go the website noted above there are details of UD’s fraternity/sorority Chapter Assessment Program (CAP). Hope this is helpful.
@mckenzieb1855 – My son is in a UD fraternity. I wasn’t really in favor of his decision to rush (assumed involvement would offer way to many distractions), but I have since changed my mind. I have been very pleased with his social and community involvement. Many of the members have become his good friends. I have met some of them and they are great kids. From what I can see, UD does not tolerate any form of hazing and the Greek organizations know that. If my D goes to Del she may want to be in a sorority and I have been assured that hazing will not be a worry. Before you rush, ask around and talk to as many people as you can about Greek life pros and cons. There are websites that “rank” fraternities and sororities at various universities, but I would not trust any of that info at all. I really appreciate that the university provides the CAP information on the website.
@mckenzieb1855 My daughter is in a sorority at UD and loves it. She experienced no hazing. The way they do rush is good in that you are made to meet with every sorority and find the best fit. My D wasn’t even looking a the sorority she joined when she first started. But, she really meshed well with the girls and loves it. Good luck!
How much does a sorority cost at UD? I am interested!
I believe my D’s cost is $500 per semester…might be a bit more. It depends on the sorority. I know if you have issues paying they can do installments. Definitely gone up since I was in a fraternity in the 80’s. It cost me $180 for the year.
Some of the sororities have their own residences where students can live instead of in a dorm. Our D lived in a sorority house her sophomore year (some sororities require members to live at the sorority at least for one year-unless enough other members elect to stay so the house is full). She had to pay semester chapter fees of around $500.00 and then paid for her room cost (about the same as cost for a dorm plus a little more as the sorority had a chef who prepared decent dinner meals Sunday thru Thursday). She then had to purchase her other meals elsewhere (she used the off-campus meal plan-OCMP-which is not afffiliated with UD) or make them herself in the kitchen in the sorority. There also are additional costs for incidentals like outfits for events/formal affairs (you can’t wear the same outfit to them all !!!). So it really is not cheap to be in a sorority at UD.
@Mwallenmd Funny you should say that. My daughter is a junior now. For her senior year she is kind of required to live in the sorority house. It’s one of the ones that the school owns near north campus. Thankfully, her roommate is her best friend from the sorority. Plus, she will get the experience of living in a sorority house before she graduates.
When do the sororities rush? My daughter is a freshman spring admit (starting this semester), so I’m curious if she is interested in joining if she would have to wait until her sophomore year.
In order to rush for a sorority in Spring 2016 for all Spring admits the following is required:
If you are a first time University of Delaware student in Spring 2016 (i.e. transfer student), you must mail a copy of your previous institution(s) transcripts to: Amne Harrington, 228 Trabant University Center, Newark DE 19716. Your transcripts must show your cumulative GPA and earned credit hours. The requirement of a 2.5 collegiate GPA and 12 earned credit hours applies to transfer students as well. If you do not meet one or both of those requirements, you will be removed from the process. Transcripts must be received by Monday, February 8th at midnight. No exceptions will be made.
@ProudNYMomma The main sorority rush is only in spring. It starts a few weeks after school starts. Once and a while a sorority will rush in the fall…But, that only happens when they don’t get their quota…which is not a problem for most sororities.
@ProudNYMomma I am currently a student who is rushing this spring at UD! Your daughter can rush just make sure she registers before February 8th! My good friend rushed last year as an incoming spring transfer and she just had to mail her transcript from her previous institute. Also, sororities do not rush in the fall so I would recommend if she wants to join one to do it this spring! Rush starts the 12th. Good luck (:
