Hi, I’m a legal resident and my green card has recently expired and therefore I want to know if it will in anyway affect my college application and financial aid and student loans.
Why don’t you renew it?

What do you mean “has recently expired”? Have you filed the paperwork to renew it and you are waiting for the new card to arrive in the mail, or have you done something (like move out of the US for an extended period of time) that would cause you to lose that status?
If you are in green card status and just waiting around for the new card, then you apply in that status. If/when you are asked to produce the card itself to show your status, that would be the time to say either “here it is” or “it is in the mail, what proof do you need from me?”
If you have lost your green card status then you have to apply as an international applicant unless you are applying to a public college/university in a state where you meet that state’s requirements for being considered an in-state applicant.
If you lost your status, it’s lost.
If you’re just waiting for the new card to arrive but are still “in status”, then you’re fine.
