Does anybody know Grinnell's Fall 2010 acceptance rate?

I have always been surprised by the high % acceptance rate for such a top school like Grinnell. I was accepted a few days ago, so I was just wondering what the rate was this year.

As the Director of Admissions states in the acceptance letter, "you were chosen from one of the most talented groups of applicants that Grinnell has ever seen". I'm sure the acceptance rate was lower than the past years, but how much exactly?

Looks like it was about 30% and yes, it must be location. The statistic is deceptive, though, because Grinnell’s reputation for rigor means not many slackers apply, so they still end up with a school full of really smart, highly motivated students.

bethievt raises a very good point. Grinnell is known as being one of the most intellectual colleges in the country. Slackers do not apply to Grinnell as they know that the students who go to Grinnell are not slackers. I also think there are many schools like the Ivies and some other big “NAME” schools that many times have tons of applicants that never really had a chance of getting in, but apply just on the chance that they might. You can’t go by those statistics. I think it would be far more interesting to see a statistic that shows the caliber of the applicant pool. I do think location plays into it as well.

The students who apply are willing to consider a small school in a small town in the middle of (gentle rolling) fields–…that type of student is smaller than in years’ past. Grinnell is an amazing institution and my daughter (about to graduate) has been challenged by her professors and given tremendous opportunities to develop her interests, both academic and in other domains. (Just in case you are doubting ‘quality’ of student, she was well in the top 10% (can’t remember exactly) of a high school graduating class of well over 1000 students and had perfect ACT score and high SAT…for what that is worth…and she had been accepted by her other choices). Her advisor has been incredibly helpful to her as well. They bring in wonderful performers and, unless you are really a shopping addict, there is so much going on the relative isolation is not that important. If you want dedicated professors, quality infrastructure and a diverse, motivated group of students, it is a great school.

NY Times reported that for first round of Early Decision Grinnell had 176 early applications, compared to 175 last year; 90 acceptances 51% , compared to 107 61% ,
total anticipated class size: 390 (so 300 from ED round II + regular admission).
