Ground transportaion to/from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport

Hi, D was accepted to Case Western and we are planning a trip to Case Western by plane. Since we are from CT my D will most likely be flying home and I would like her to experience that aspect before accepting. Does anyone know if taking ground transportation from the airport to/from campus is safe? Or does anyone know if Case Western will provide shuttles to/from the airport for students?

It’s safe enough. But just to be extra cautious, you may want the travelling to be done during daylight. The walks can be unpredictable.

RTA train Red line goes from the airport to the campus stations (E. 120 or Cedar-University)
<a href=“Red Line | rideRTA”>http://www.riderta.com/routes/redline

Thank you ChiGuy for the information. I would assume daylight to be the ideal travel time though have reservations about safe enough! Do you know if Case Western provides shuttles to the airport around university breaks? If not how do Case students get to and from the airport if they choose not to use the RTA?

To my knowledge, Case does not provide transportation. Most popular way of getting to the airport besides RTA is having a friend drive, as there are many students that have cars on campus (and are generous enough to provide a ride).

That is how I used to get to the airport…train…

My son takes the RTA. He says it’s safe during the day.

How about car service? Is it fairly affordable?

My D has taken the train - with other students- and has shared cabs…I think it was fairly reasonable and really is worth it if it’s cold and snowy and the flight is early - in the dark with luggage. I also noticed that Case did provide a shuttle schedule around winter break but my D finished a couple days earlier and wanted to come home.

Thank you all for your insight. I am worried about safety because of what I have read about Cleveland. However, we will be visiting Case Western very soon so we can get a better feel for the area.

Enjoy your visit! I think you will be pleasantly surprised by how nice the campus and surrounding area are…they have recently developed the Uptown area and there are plenty of student friendly restaurants. The campus itself is well patrolled and feels very safe. There is public access because of University Hospitals and the cultural institutions located basically on campus but everyone seems to co-exist quite nicely. As with any school located near a large city there are neighborhoods to avoid…this is also true of CWRU but no worse and students have no reason to be there. Let us know what you think after your visit…hopefully after the worst of the snow and cold!

Sdgal2, I appreciate that you said the campus is well patrolled and feels very safe especially because you have a daughter who attends Case Western!! My daughter is interested in nursing and will spend a lot of time doing clinicals at the University Hospital, Cleveland Clinic and other health centers so she will most likely be traveling to and from her clinicals at odd hours. I understand there is a green bus for use and I assume she will be with others. We are looking forward to our visit!

My DD has to fly home too. She has used the RTA (train) numerous times but I make sure she is traveling during the daylight hours. If she is traveling after dark I have her take a taxi which I think runs about $45 before tip. If she can share a taxi or have one of her friends pick her up at the airport, then we go that route too. The campus is fine but being on the RTA is not on campus. She has been safe but she has had a few people on RTA that made her feel uncomfortable, so she usually tries to travel with a few friends either way. Nothing too serious happened but she heard a few girls (not students just inner city girls) teasing making fun of her for her tattoo. She had gotten a henna during all of the finals activities that CASE offers and apparently these girls can’t tell the difference.

I probably won’t go the RTA route when we visit and will stick with taxi’s. I am from NYC and travel the subway system frequently. Fortunately to get around the part of the NYC I need to go does not need to pass through sketchy areas. Also after a certain time it just isn’t wise to travel the MTA in NYC for obvious reasons. It seems that to get to the Cleveland airport by RTA you need to travel through some sketchy parts of the city and that makes me uncomfortable, especially for girls. Though I do want to give it a try personally so I know what it would be like to do so.

I keep hearing the same thing from numerous posters that the campus is fine and to me that is most important!!!

BluePoodle is your D loving Case and what is her major? Mine will be studying Nursing.

Murphy1008,
My daughter really loves CASE. She is BME and really loves what she is studying. She has to work hard but she has great friends and is in a sorority with a great group of girls. She’s not a fan of Cleveland’s winter weather but she can handle it. She is happy with most of her professors and TA’s and knows CASE has a lot of resources. She is an assistant to a couple of Grad students in their research and really likes how helpful the upperclassman and grad’s are in working with her.

On campus, the RTA or anywhere the rule is just use your head. If it is getting close to dark, make sure you are with a group of friends. You can call transportation if you need to work late in a lab (I forget what CASE calls it) but just use the transportation resources the university give you and your D should be fine.

Welcome to CASE!

I see that you can use the Rapid Transit for free as a Case Student, as well as get into many cultural institutions and even the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Also the Case Shuttle buses will take you to the Rapid Transit stop.

murphy, I have a D at Case also, also a sophomore like BluePoodle’s. She also travels by air and has taken the RTA most times, on occasion she has gotten a ride but mostly due to luggage/flight time rather than safety. Although we don’t live in an area with public transportation, she has learned street smarts.

Enjoy your visit! Case was a “mom’s choice” for my D and I literally brought her to the visit weekend kicking and screaming. Before we left she had changed to "when can I put in my deposit ;-)

We are visiting for a sorority parents weekend in April and will take the RTA ourselves and see what it’s like

@jackief, we are looking forward to our visit. I’m happy to hear your daughter feels safe! I am still contemplating whether or not we will take ground transportation from the airport to Case. It depends on the time our plane arrives at the airport.

My daughter is curious about the sororities and glad to hear your daughter joined!

@jackief, Case was not my DD’s first choice until we visited too. I will also be there for the parent’s weekend for sororities as well.

@murphy1008, Recruitment for sororities does not happen until Spring semester for incoming freshman. Have your DD participate in the Fall Semester Sorority Open Houses and tell her to get to know some of the Greek girls. She’ll learn a lot about them that way.

@BluePoodle and @Jackief - my freshman D just joined a sorority so it is all new to me…did you also attend parents’ weekend for sorority last year when your D’s were first years? Do you feel comfortable disclosing which sorority or maybe pm me? Thanks!

I just sent you a PM @Sdgal2. Congratulations to your daughter on her new sorority. Feel free to PM me if you like.
