Has anyone taken this yet? I am scheduled to take it on the 13th and I'm curious to hear feedback from others. I read in another thread that it is similar to the SAT Verbal so I've been flipping through an SAT practice book in an effort to prepare.

Hi AMorrison,

The exam was really pretty simple. I don’t remember the first part of it, but it was pretty straightforward questions about grammar and reading comprehension - easier than some of my exams in high school. For the essay, they ask a vague question like what your greatest achievement has been. I, too, was really nervous beforehand, but if you’re comfortable writing, you shouldn’t have a problem.

Good luck!

I am just wondering if you could share some information about the GSAE with me. I am getting ready to take the exam and am really nervous. I never took the SAT’s so I am not sure what to expect. Any help you can give me would be amazing!! I also noticed that you just received your acceptance letter! Congratulations!!

Thanks!

Hi Freddy,

Do a search of this forum, and the “Columbia College vs. General Studies” thread in the main Columbia forum for “GSAE”. There is tons of info to be found.

The test is made up of four parts. The first three are multiple choice (sentence structure, reading comprehension and critical thinking). The last is an essay. You’ll get the topic right before you begin writing. If you’re comfortable reading and writing you will not have a problem with the GSAE. It’s straightforward and I ended up finishing each section early so I had time to back and check my answers. Don’t stress out too much, you’ll be fine!

This exam covers the basics except for math. No math! Anyway, if you can read a newspaper with no problem (reading comprehension), make sense of a subway system (critical reasoning) and decipher the metaphors and simile used in current day advertising and marketing (understanding information from a variety of sources) you will do fine on this exam. Oh, don’t forget the essay. With that said, I’m sure the test is carefully designed to detect any potential flaws a potential student might have. The test is conducted in a very relaxed atmosphere (small room) and the lady administering the exam was very nice. So, no stress there either.
