GT for Business Chances

Hello,

I have posted this before, but I was wondering if anyone had any more input. I took my ACT again and my score did not change. I was very disappointed to say the least. I want to go to GT for business and possibly double major in Finance and receive the International Relations designition with it. I have become really interested in international business, particulary German foreign business, so I would be taking German classes as well.

If any one has any info on the above info please let me know. GT is my top choice right now and I want to compile as much information as I can.

Here is my info and please tell me my chances. I will also be applying at the earliest possible date, but dont think I am qualified for the Presidential Scholarship.

GPA: 3.95 unweighted
Top 10% of my class.
ACT: 26 :(

About 15 Honors classes and will have 4 APs by the end of my Senior year (my school only offers 6)-A's in all AP

ECs:
-Volunteering at Hospital in the summer

-Work part time at Chick-fil-A (3 yrs)

-Lettered in Band, Bowling, Football

-Writer for School Paper

-Member of Mock Trial for 4 yrs.

-I have a lot of various community serive hours like tornado recovery, Red Cross, charities, and school volunteering

-Member of NHS

-Member of BETA

-Member of DECA and FBLA

Awards:

Billy Mitchell Award- c/2ndLT. in Civil Air Patrol (equivalent of Eagle Scout)

I was also an International DECA competitor (business and marketing club) for creating a business and went to Anaheim CA.

I also attended the TN Governor's School for International Studies at the University of Memphis. I was a student there and took classes in Political Science and Microeconomics

Thanks for reading!!

Bump…

It looks like you have everything great to get in except that ACT score. What did you make on the math and english parts, from both tests?

Have you considered taking the SAT just to see how you do there?

I made a 27 in English and a 25 in Math. I think I will take the SAT the next time it is offered and I will try one more time on the ACT.

Do you guys think I could get in without an improvement on the score??? The average is 28-32, so I am not that far off…

You might be able to get in with those scores, but to be on the safe side it would help if you could raise them. I practiced a couple of months with ACT review books and those helped me get a 33-E and 32-M. All tech cares about is the english and math parts for the ACT (Yes I did ask an official admissons officer from the Savannah campus).

Are you sure they don’t consider writing as well? Might be worth verifying with the official admissions office.

Well, I think my writing is good. I got a 10 on the writing section. What do you think I can do to increase my chances??? I am going to visit later this summer, so they know I am interested.

They might take the combined english+writing/2 score, but I’m not sure. I just know they really don’t consider your science and reading score because they realize it’s just a timed reading piece of crap.

Visiting the campus won’t help admission wise, but it will help you confirm your decision to go to Tech. Like I said, you have a great resume and the only thing that could possibly hold you back is the ACT scores. Study for the ACT (heavy emphasis on the english and math sections) and tak it again. Besides that, there’s really nothing more than you can do.

2 points on the ACT is roughly a standard deviation, so it is a big deal. Use a rough table (which is not official, they don’t publish official numbers), the difference between 26 and 28 is the difference between the top 80th percentile and the 95th percentile.

Your GPA is excellent, so that helps you, but that ACT score… With your current ACT score, you’re almost certainly deferred early and probably wait listed in the regular admission process. If you can get your ACT into the 28 range, you’ll get in early (but you’ll need it in the 31-32 range to receive consideration for PSP).

Really?? almost no chance with current ACT??? How many people get rejected for business at GT??? I know its a good school, but I didnt know it was that competitive.

You have no chance for the PSP or early admission. You’re probably waitlisted for regular admission.

GT does not differentiate with regards to major, so you’re applying against all of the engineering students, not just the other MGT applicants.

I disagree with GP Burdell. You will not get PSP semi-finalist with that score or early admissions, but I would consider you a low match/slight reach for regular admissions. The middle 50% for ACT is 28-32, putting you below the second quartile of scores, but the rest of you application is decently strong and should help you out, especially your GPA.

Does your school offer more than 4APs and if so, why haven’t you taken them?

Have you taken any APs yet, or are you waiting entirely for senior year(this is not good and could severely damage your chances since it fails to demonstrate your ability to handle rigorous courses by the time you apply.)?

I would take the SAT and ACT one last time. Tech will take your highest scores from each section of both exams. You should really consider studying for these exams(not just retaking them). Although I (along with many other high school students) never studied for admissions tests, if you are not improving you need to. Get practice books, take practice exams, get help with you weak areas, etc…

We don’t really disagree - we both said no on PSP and early admission, and we both think regular admission is a reach (I said she’d be waitlisted, but that’s the same thing as a slight reach).

Her ACT puts her in the bottom 5th percentile among accepted applicants last year, which is a tough place to be for a non-athlete (you have to figure it’s recruited athletes at the bottom or international students with high Math / low English scores). In addition, the EC’s are pretty bland.

So I dont think there are a lot of people applying to GT for business??? I know that I won’t be competing against engineering majors, because they only have a limited number of spots available for engineering. If everyone had the same stats and applied for the same major then that would be a big problem. I think a lot more peopl apply to GT for engineering than business.

I do agree with you guys that I will not get PSP and I may not get in early, but I still hope I have a chance.

ShankadaTanka: be optimistic. Apply early and see what happens. Take time with the application, though, as that is the one thing totally in your control. Your grades are great! :-)

ShankadaTanka

Also, for those don’t know ACT conversion, 26 is roughly 1160 - 1190 on 1600 SAT scale. Ga Tech incoming freshman has roughly 1350, roughly 30 ACT.

However, Ga Tech use scale value. If you have high GPA, you only need lower SAT/ACT.
If you have low GPA, you will need higher SAT/ACT score, for example.

Nobody knows the exact formula right now. One measures is Freshman Index. Not sure Ga Tech use it, but just for comparsion.

Freshman Index for ACT is following

(500 x High School GPA) + (ACT Composite score x 42) + 88

You have 3155 while Ga Tech student has average of 3229.

Since you are applying as management major, you are low match/low reach as applicant. This past year was crazy year. Ga Tech got a lot more applicants but also had to accept a lot more students (and even offer 200 off waiting list, per ajc).

So I think that you get in.

If I were you, I would apply early and ask for admitted in summer semester. At Tech, summer semester admitted students either college athletes or students has slighter lower stats.

Two thirds of management majors start as engineering then switch to management. Because of this, Tech does not need to admit that many management majors relative to engineering majors (approximately 200 compared to 2000 engineering majors) and being the top business school in the state, there are plenty of in-state applicants for that major.

ok…thanks guys for all your help. I am a little more optimistic now and I will study my ass off for the SAT and ACT. Thanks again!!!

bump…I just wanted to add that I received a 5 on the APUSH exam. I was wondering if that may sway the decision. I have also been in contact with the management college over the summer and they seem to show interest. Do they do this to everyone???
Thanks
