GT time frame??

For a Guaranteed Transfer, are you required to transfer during/after your freshman year?? Does Cornell specify a time frame for you to use the GT, or can you choose how long (1 or 2 years) you stay at your first school??

thanks for the help

I think it's stated on your GT letter. There are sophomore year GT's (I think these are given more frequently) and the junior year ones.
I'm pretty sure you have to use your GT in the year that they specify, or else you just become a regular transfer.

thanks canadaeh

Ya I remember only reading the junior ones from one of the colleges...but perhaps that 2 year one stopped because I haven't seen any lately (I THINK it was maybe hotel). But ya it says in ur letter, wat college are you transfering to?

Figgy, I'm applying as a junior transfer to ILR (without a GT).

I was asking about the GT policy because I just found out another girl who went to my hs (who did have a GT) is planning on applying to ILR as a transfer too. I'm worried about how this may affect me. I was a stronger freshman applicant than this girl (I had a higher rank, better ECs, and similar SAT scores) but I didn't originally apply to ILR (I applied to CAS).

Do you think this could affect my competitiveness as a transfer applicant??

The GT pool is seperate. You will be competing in the normal transfer pool. I don't think you quite understand wat a GT is. GT's are already accepted as transfers if they meet the requirements for their freshman year in college. The only way that this effects u is by filling up some of the transfer spots and by making the transfer % that you see on websites go down by a good amount. You will not be competing against her and other people like her in the transfer process. If she completes her requirements and decides to go...she's in; no application necessary. I am also a gt for ILR so perhaps I will eventually be going to school with her.
You may think you were a better applicant than her statistically, but Cornell looks at passion, service, and ec's (and such) very highly. Her essays and recommendations might have also been extremely good. I'd bet that her passion is what helped her get in. (ps she is transfering sophomore year anyways [that is if all ILR GTs transfer the same year]). Best of luck! (Where are you going to college fresh-soph year?)

Thanks for clarifying Figgy. I wasnt aware that GTs are in a separate pool.

I don't think that I properly explained my situation. I'm going to be a sophomore at SUNY Bing and I'm interested in transferring for Fall 2007. Mainly, I thought that the girl I referred to in post 4 had given up her guaranteed transfer spot by not applying after her freshman year..If she applies is she now entered into the regular transfer pool??

If she was given the option to transfer Sophomore year and she didn't then she gave it up. She might have been given the option to junior year tho...(even if she did give it up but then gives a transfer app the year after she might be given a little bit of a special push for being given a gt previously...even tho it would be confusing why she didnt take it soph year...did she not make the cut for requirements? or are you being hypothetical and confusing me lol).

Suny Bing is a great school so getting a great gpa there and such would help for transfering. Best of luck!

If you get accepted to Cornell GT do they specify which schools you can go to? What's in it for the other school to let you do Freshman year there or do you not tell them that you intend to transfer to Cornell?

You just have to get your school approved by them (pretty much 99% of schools that one would choose would be...)

I'm not telling my Freshman college becuase : they might care about me less and my guidance counseler might just be like "well why put effort into you when ur not even gonna be here next year". Also kids might not want to commit to a friendship with me when I am leaving the next year. I donno I just think it's better for now not to tell everyone. I eventually will...but not any time too soon.
