So I am a student at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA). Let's say that I get a GPA of 3.6 or higher (I think I have a chance because I received a 3.7 at University of Oregon) and I get into W&M due to the guaranteed admission agreement. What are the odds of me getting into the Mason School of Business? I am guessing that it would be harder to get into the school because I am assuming (mom told me never to assume, but I just can't help it!) that a 3.6 GPA at a community college is worth less than a 3.6 at W&M. Is that correct? In addition, UVA said they were going to try to get more VCCS students into their B-school; is W&M doing the same?

I am aware that I have to send a letter of intent to matriculate at W&M. Is that binding? Because I do not want to go if I do not get into Mason.

Also, will Mason admissions take into account my GPA at University of Oregon or just NOVA?

Thanks!

Glad you’re interested in transferring to W&M.

One quick note about the guaranteed admission agreement, you have to receive 45 of the credits towards your AA at a VCCS institution. You mentioned that you transferred to NVCC from Oregon so just make sure you a) take 45 credits towards your AA at NVCC and b) take all of the required courses for the guaranteed admission agreement at NVCC. If you don’t, you won’t be eligible for guaranteed admission.

As for the letter of intent, it’s not technically binding but since you will be gaining access to W&M resources like academic advising and such we hope you sign it only if you’re sincere about transferring.

If admitted to W&M, you can then apply to the Mason School of Business. Admission to Mason is not guaranteed even if your admission to W&M is guaranteed. Transfer students are not competing with W&M students for places in Mason. By the time transfer admission to Mason occurs, W&M students have already been admitted or denied. Generally, admission to Mason is done by GPA assuming the students are eligible (having junior standing and the pre-req courses). A 3.7 transfer GPA will be competitive for admission to Mason. If your NVCC GPA is made up of several semesters than your Oregon GPA will likely not be considered but it could be.

Hope this is helpful.

Oh, well darn I didn’t know I had to be admitted into W&M before I could apply to the business school. I can’t afford to do all of the classes for the Business Administration A.S. degree AND the gen eds for W&M, the degree is 62 credits by itself! What a shame Thanks for the help though!

I’m a bit confused because many transfer applicants are able to get an AA and take the pre-req business courses in the normal amount of credits at a VCCS school (61-63 credits). Also, remember you don’t have to do both. You can get your AS in business and simply not pursue the guaranteed admission agreement. No matter which way you go we like to see a transfer-oriented associate degree from those transferring from a VCCS school but it doesn’t have to include all the W&M GERs.
