Your chances are good. A 1300 on the SAT is fine, but an increase in the score will be helpful. I am beginning to become a big booster of the ACT test. (Of course my d hasn't taken it yet--but will next week.) My kid is having problems with critical reading and I don't think the SAT's are a good fit for her. We feel she has nothing to lose by taking the ACT as she can take the test and not have her HS or the college see the results. You can take it a few times and then send only the score you want to. Therefore if you do badly on the test, no one has to know. And maybe you'll do even better than on the SAT. It is different than the SAT test. I would suggest you get the Official ACT study guide (I think Peterson publishes it) review it and see if this test might work to your advantage. The test is being given 4/9 and 6/11. We're from NY too. I'm hearing that a lot more NY kids are taking the ACT's. Also another advantage is that you may not have to take additional tests like the SAT II's, as colleges will use the ACT as a substitute. Remember the ACT just added a writing portion so you may have to take the ACT with writing. Good luck. You seem to have a good "resume". Just relax-things have a tendency to work out just fine.

Find schools that you can afford without loans. Talk to your hs counselor and see how students with your grades and test scores do in college admissions.

Will you need financial aid to attend either BC or NYU? If so - and you really need to have a heart to heart talk with your parents that lays just how much these schools will cost on the table - I'd suggest you broaden your range of schools. Yes, you will have a shot at BC and NYU but you need to find some solid safeties as well and be sure that you can afford them.

LOL, money is not a problem we will take out a student loan!, and no im not just applying to these two schools, all i want to know is if i have a shot at getting accepted. (i can see where everyone is coming from, a parental point of view with the money, however the education that i will be getting is worth far more)

Well, to make yourself viable for selective colleges, you need to take the most rigorous classes your school offers. Knowing your GPA alone is not enough. You need to boost your SAT and perhaps try the ACT; you also probably need to take 2 or 3 SAT-IIs depending on the college you wish to apply to (although you may not have to, if you take the ACT).

You also have to be very realistic about taking loans. I expect that BC or NYU are going to cost $40k+ per year, i.e., $160k+ for four years, more likely $180k with annual inflation. You mention that your parents have limited income and you have other siblings. Taking out that much in loan seems to me quite unrealistic. So you need to have academic and financial safeties: schools that do not cost so much or where you have a chance of getting some merit money.

Sorry, ace. I come down on the same side as carolyn. You throw out the line about student loans as if it were nothing. You do realize you're talking up to $160,000, right? That's not a good business proposition. The ROI is not there. Broaden your school choices. Then, if you get into NYU or BC, you'll be happy. If not, you'll have other choices.

Also, NYU's Stern is very serious about getting high math scores on the SAT, so that's one thing you need to do to help you there.

note * im not just applying to these two schools, i just need advice on admissions. oh my dad owns 3 apartment buildings in ny, i wrote family income is low because i mostly stay with my mother. (im telling you money is not a problem)
