Guidance

I cannot rave more about my new guidance counselor who rapidly became an advocate jump starting my college search. She wrote me a great eval and went above and beyond in securing teacher evals. etc.....

I know it is appropriate to send a thank you note to a teacher who wrote a recommendation. What about a special circumstance such as my guidance counselor. Is a modest gift like a gift card OK?

yeap perfectly alright. but don't overdo it or it may amount to bribery. some teachers, especailly one as noble as your counselor, might not like that.

I think I will get her a gift certificate for a bookstore around X-Mas.

A gift card is fine. It's very common for students to give their counselors and recommenders and teachers cards of thanks.

I know a student who actually baked cookies and gave it to her chem teacher. For her birthday. Of course, they are close and she is one of the chem's teachers favorite students, but it can looked upon negatively by others. "Sucking up" and such.

I do know when I'm hanging out with the teachers I'm really comfortable and I bought some snacks, I offer them it and vice versa. I know some teachers with hidden chocolate/snacks in their file cabinets. :) If you have such a relationship with your counselor or recs, it's a little more relaxed when it comes to offering them gifts.
