Guide for UM Dorms

I tried to give a thorough overview of all of the Michigan dorms. Ran it by a lot of different people to get input, but take everything with a grain of salt since everyone has a different dorm experience. The post wouldn't fit here (it's pretty long) so put it up on the local housing site. Please leave feedback if you have different thoughts and hope it helps.

I wish i’d had this when I was looking. Great! Only thing I could think to add would be the security around each dorm.

This is awesome! The university’s dorm descriptions don’t give you this kind of insight - they just say everything is great. Wish I had this 3 years ago…

Second that. Good to see someone actually giving what you want to know about each place and not just how many rooms there are. Trying to come up with suggestions but actually think you got a pretty good picture of all of the ones I know well.

Is there any way to talk to students who live in the dorms now?

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Been looking around forever for something like this.

Thanks for the feedback! I’ve tried to include the security information, but couldn’t find a whole lot out there and wasn’t sure on the specifics of each dorm. Everywhere is generally pretty safe though. I’ve never really talked to anyone who felt there was a lack of security where they were.

Hey was just doing more research and was thinking that even though yours is definitely more helpful than others, it would be better if you had some stats on the different dorms too. Like room layouts and number of people there etc. That info is out there but would be cool if you just consolidated everything into yours. It’d be easier to compare everything that way. Just a thought…

It was helpful how it has the different communities with info on the dorm it’s in. Don’t think you really get to choose your dorm too much beyond the communities if you’re a freshman though.

You can pick your neighborhood and when i did it pretty sure we could still request certain dorms even though you weren’t guaranteed.

nice job of capturing the people in the different dorms without stereotyping

Where (or what community) would you suggest for someone who is a little quieter and don’t really want a party dorm but also don’t want to live on north campus?

^ Probably not much chance for a freshmen. Perhaps in one of the residential program that is more academic oriented. But what’s wrong with North Campus? It just sound perfect for you.

Where is the housing application?

Joannie, I take it you’re a girl? You might want to look into Betsy Barbour and Helen Newberry (and Martha Cook, but that’s a bit different), though you probably won’t have much choice in the matter, sadly.
