There are about 10 cop cars, sirens and lights blazing, around downtown right now.

I see people who look like they're in a gang. I hear pops.

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?

More pertinently, is there anywhere that has live-action, up-to-date information about what's going on, like police scanner reports or something? I find it disconcerting that I have no idea what is causing all the ruckus.

I hear there was something about a protest, but jeeze.

For the record, the craziness downtown seems to have been related to the protest over the police brutality case. The cop who's going to trial for it had his bail set at $3 million today, and there was a protest in Oakland earlier resulting in the use of tear gas and projectiles.

Seems it moved downtown. Tales suggest someone attacked a cop car, and all the Berkeley police force was called to contain the event, and tear gas was fired. All rumours, but it seems fairly likely (and from reliable sources).

Still the question: where to go for immediate updates on things happening involving the emergency response crews? I find it disturbing that potentially dangerous situations aren't being disclosed as quickly as possible to the city.

That was a crazy scene. I'm glad to hear it was probably tear gas over gun shots. All I know is I heard three pops and suddenly everyone was sprinting down a side street and hiding in the crevices of apartment buildings.

In regards to security notification, I alerted a security coordinator about the situation while I was there, and she relayed the information throughout the student network (dorm security monitors and other SCs, mainly), but she called the Resident Director on duty, and the RD said that she was on Shattuck and nothing was going on so it must have been a false alarm and to tell everyone on campus not to worry about it. THAT sure makes me feel safe.

As for police notification, yeah, it's unacceptable nothing has been said yet.

Yeah, hearing the pops was the worst part. I overlook the parking lot of the Bank of America, and there were a few guys (5-7?) hanging around in the parking lot, all wearing white shirts, making a lot of yelling noises and pushing each other around.

It's uncomfortable knowing that SOMETHING was happening a block away, but I had no idea what on earth it was.

I STILL can't find out any information on what it was. :|
