appliedmath, why do you find the need to be militant and deffensive in your posts? Nobody else on this entire forum makes posts as combative as yours.

girl
750-verbal
720-math

appliedmath:
i meant the last post of yours I read. the point where I began to think you don't think very clearly. sorry for not being so specific

you attack everyone and harp on silly details. I hope you realize that. and you think everyone is attacking you. we are not. we are debating and you are not doing it well

Obviously there are exceptions to every generalization. I think he knows that there are some girls who do better on Math than on Verbal, and the other way around. He is correct in saying that on the whole, guys do better in math and girls do better on verbal. I just don't really know why it needs to be stated in such an environment as we have here.

It wasn't that he stated a fact, it was his qualifying it with "being good at math proves you to be superior or 'Elite'" that irritated most people.

Me, a guy-

Writing: 760
Math IC: 700

^^^^^

WHOEVER WROTE THAT MUST BE A GAY GUY!!! YES! A GAY GUY!!

just kidding. i think this whole thread is reDUCKulous.

female, 760V 780M. I guess that makes me...l33t!
hehe, owned...

Completely off topic, well not completely, but close- my AP Chem teacher averages the guys grades and the girls grades and tells us who wins, it's 5-0 guys right now, with a huge point spread. Usually about seven plus points higher. I don't know what it says, other than there are a lot of people who shouldn't be in there...

dunno if someone said this already, but i read somewhere that the reason why males tend to outscore females on the SATs, even though girls outscore guys on average in both high school and college is because the SATs reward skills that young boys are encouraged to develop in their personalities from the start, and not girls, such as quick responses, arrogance (not in the obnoxious ******* way, but the assuming you're right way) and guessing. Girls are encouraged to be more hesitant and think things through, something which doesnt help on the SATs. I thought it was a very interesting theory, and explains quite a bit.

I'm a girl: 800 math
800 verbal
My friend:(girl) 760 Math, 650 Verbal
Another Friend (guy) 800 Verbal, 700 Math
Yet another friend (guy) 750 Verbal, 750 Math
So tell me what to think... (though i have to admit that LOTS more guys get into the best engineering/physical sciences/math colleges here in India... but I think we girls are catching up...)
Anyway I think the bit about Math making you elite is b***s. I'm good at math but some of my friends who aren't are MUCH smarter than me lol

Did I mention that I find tofu absolutely repulsive?

Why Isn't This Thread Dead Yet?

(because you keep posting)

I'm the only girl that is two grades ahead in math in my school >< Compare to around 7 guys...

Depends on how you were raised.

Male: 750 V, 630 M on my first try

My parents read, talked to me etc. but I've never done math or science outside of class really.

Heh... I probably am the prime example for this stereotype:

800 Math
660 Verbal

Yes... I know... theres a disparity between the two scores... (Im a guy btw)

:)

Ha Ha. Only person at my school going to MIT-girl, 1600 SAT, val. Top guys in my class-interested in pol sci. My boyfriend wants to be an engineer. My best girlfriend wants to go into politics. She got a 780 on the matIIC. He got a 740. She, 1570 SAT. He, 1390.

What the hell is the point of this?!? In the year 1600, women didn't even have the option of higher education. Men would have been better at math AND literature back then, hardy har har! We must have evolved!!!

Come on, for intelligent people you sure aren't thinking outside of the box on this one. It's like everyone's thinking "deep down we all know boys are smarter and better, but maybe if we argue that girls are equal we'll have less guilty consciences and we'll, you know, encourage them."

Wake up and realize that just because we all want to keep believing in our "innate abilty" ******** that cultural bias IS THERE AND CAN'T BE IGNORED. Just because we like to believe in some "cold hard facts" doesn't make it any less idiotic to pretend that "cultural stereotype" excuses are flimsy fabrications to hide the fact that really, women are just sorta stupid. It's actually braver to realize that culture plays a larger role than genetics. I know, it's so much easier to just say, sex determines destiny and brain power, so let's give up! Honestly, do you WANT genetics to determine everything? Are you all so SATISFIED to sit there and spout repititious "facts" concerning "scientificlly proven brain differences" about which you know nothing?

Reasons OTHER than innate ability that are undeniable:

-I would be intimidated to go to a 75% male school if I were a mathematically gifted woman
-If I had the option of putting my effort into math or writing early on I would pick writing because I would see that women can have greater fame/success/influence that way
-boys play with toy guns and machines, girls with dolls
-boys are trained that if they are deficient in math they aren't real men, which is a fate worse than death in our society
-when I have scored better/know more in math than Random Typical Boy, I am afraid to show it because it will hurt his pride
-boys are encouraged to Bull **** their own abilities to no end, making themselves sound better when they're really just mediocre, which leads to POSTS LIKE THIS.

And those are way more factual than any "scientific studies of the female and male brains" PUH-LEEZE. Are we so pretentious that we believe we can come to complex scientific conclusions like this when we can't even stop the ozone from going up in flames? Bad science to set about proving something you WANT to prove. Reminds me of Broca. Social darwinism should have died long ago.

The brain is no more gender specific than the kidneys.

Actually, kateschmiddy, have you read that recent TIME magazine article (it was front page). It discusses the different areas of the brain and how they differ from female to male. It, in fact, says that there are differences. You should really check it out.
