GWU Summer Housing 2013

Anyone looking to stay in George Washington Univ. housing this summer? I'm interning at the Senate from the end of May to end of June and I'm looking at options at GW right now. I could use some advice about the best buildings/locations to stay in. Currently deciding between Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis and Francis Scott Key dorms. Does anyone who's stayed on campus before/is a current student have any advice about which one is better? I know JBKO is right near the Foggy Bottom Metro, but is the area a safe and desirable place to live? Seems a bit sketchy, but this is just judging from google street view! FSK doesn't seem super convenient metro-wise, but it seems to be in a better area, though its hard for me to tell as I'm not very familiar with the area. Any advice would be much appreciated!

I thought the only rooms they were offering are Lafayette and Amsterdam? Maybe South Hall (most expensive) and Town Houses (i don’t know how one gets those). But surely not the other ones.

The area right by Washington Circle and the hospital is actually a wee bit on the sketch side, but generally speaking the entire area of Foggy Bottom is very safe, very populated, and very well located. At GW you’re not only close to the FB metro stop (blue/orange), you’re also a very quick walk to two red stops (Farragut North and Dupont Circle). You have a Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s right there, not to mention a variety of restaurants and coffee places (eg. Burger, Tap & Shake, Roti, Founding Farmers, Chop’t, Devon and Blakely, Starbucks). A lot of the nightlife is a short walk away in Dupont Circle or a short metro ride in Adams Morgan, to U Street, etc. Very convenient–you couldn’t ask for a better location.

Congratulations on your internship! DC is a great place to be. My son spent a fantastic summer there last year. So much to do, so little time! Unfortunately, his time spent at the FSK dorm was the worst part of his experience. The windows did not open (appeared to be painted shut). When I picked him up in August, I saw a mouse scurry from the hallway, under a large gap between the bottom of his door and the floor, right into his room. I kid you not. Disgusting! It was worse inside. In the kitchen, I saw 3 large rat traps! He and his roommates complained to GW about mice someone came and set up rat traps and checked on them periodically, but they never caught anything. His roomate looked into tenant laws and found scores of violations.

On the positive side, the location was close to the metro, and his commnute was much shorter than those who worked with him but lived at Georgetown. GW was filled with fellow interns and there was always something to do.

Good luck with your decision. I will ask my son if he knows of a better dorm and report back when I hear from him.

My daughter will also be interning on Capitol HIll this summer, and I’d appreciate any suggestions on housing. One friend suggested the GWU area, but your report gives me pause. Please let us know what your son says! Thanks.

I will be interning at the United States Treasury this summer, and I too am staying in GWU housing. I’ve already applied and I signed up for Madison Hall.

@applemath, I’ve heard great things about GWU’s housing. Also, I’ve heard GWU is filling up fast, so you may want to go ahead and reserve your daughter a spot.
