GWU v UF in terms of overall prestige

Which University do you consider to be overall more prestigious?

Which is more prestigious for UG?

Which is more prestigious for Grad School?

UF is mos def better. GWU isn't worth the $$$$$ either (highest tuition in the country)

They're probably the same in overall prestige.

tie would go to UF, GWU is uber expensive

GWU is way more prestigious for poly sci, journalism, international relations, and the internships are infinately better at GWU

if youre not interested in those fields, then theyre about the same, but GWU is about 20k more a year

I go to GW...it seems to be well respected in Washington. Lots of GW grads are working in D.C., and people respect the school. However, UF is probably of equal caliber. No offense to UF, but GW is more expensive...but it's also not a huge public university. There are many benefits to having smaller classes and a better location.

well US news ranks UF better but its by less than 10 ranks so their pretty much the same. id say UF is a better "choice" rather than a better "school" just because UF is cheaper.

Yeah I think it's like a 2 spot difference or something quite nominal.

USNEWS ranking don't mean much if the schools in question are within a few places of each other. I mean, they fluctuate several places year by year

UF is obviously more prestigious. It has been climbing the rankings for the past few years and is now considered among the best public schools out there. Classes are still huge most of the time, but the president (forget his name) has been hiring top professors and the university has been putting out top research for quite some time. Plus, UF is a flagship public school. Flagship publics are almost always more prestigious than all but the best (top 20) private schools. US News ranks UF lower because of class sizes and teacher/student ratios. In terms of sheer prestige, UF kicks GWU's pants off, according to US News.

Which one would I recommend? That's a far different question. Prestige shouldn't matter in a college decision. I'd take UF, but that's just because I like being warm.

in the northeast, it would most definitely be GW.
Because of the lack of prestigious new england state schools, most people dont realize that public schools can be quite strong.

yeah the common person on the street in NE, but for businesses etc, UF, and in the rest of the country, UF for certain.

UF does defiantely not "kick GWU's pants off" in terms of prestige. I would prefer UF over GWU just becuase it has an actual college campus look and its cheaper than GWU. but academically and prestige wise they are the same. UF has been climbing over the years, but so have others such as GWU. GWU and UF are less than 10 places apart. thats nothing. I would say any school that is less than 10 spots apart from eachother are relatively the same thing.

I agree with huskem, at least here in the northeast (NJ) GW has the better reputation, whereas I believe most people would think UF is just a large southern state school. Personally I think they're comparable prestige-wise.

I don't actually think that UF has nearly as much prestige than GWU, especially because UF doesn't rank in the top 5 in almost any single major. Its a pretty average school, whereas GWU has very high ranking business and polsci majors

"Plus, UF is a flagship public school. Flagship publics are almost always more prestigious than all but the best (top 20) private schools. US News ranks UF lower because of class sizes and teacher/student ratios. In terms of sheer prestige, UF kicks GWU's pants off, according to US News. "

Here's how U.S. News ranks the schools:

"47. Pennsylvania State U.—University Park *

University of Texas—Austin *

University of California—Davis *

Univ. of California—Santa Barbara *

University of Florida *

George Washington University(DC)

Syracuse University(NY)

Pepperdine University(CA) "

Basically, it's a matter of one point as far as U.S. News is concerned. They are essentially the same thing prestige-wise, and their positions could easily change annually as statistics change. UF is not "obviously more prestigious." I think UF does have more research coming out of it, but those are mostly graudate students and not undergraduates. UF is much more science and engineering focused than GW, so UF would probably be better for those programs. GW, on the other hand, is very strong for international affairs and journalism.

Also, I disagree with your statement that flagship schools are better than private schools outside of the top 20. That's completely unfounded.

I just think UF

You seem to arrived at the correct answer a while ago (April 26, 2006 to be precise).

Why would you possibly pay 30k a year to go to George Washington, when UF is 3k a year and is ranked higher?
