gym?

I know walking up and down the hill is great exercise, but for those of us who like gyms, what sort of variety is there at Cal? UCLA has free itness rooms in some of their dorms. Does Berkeley have the same or similar system? Or do we have to go to outside businesses?

There are cardio machines at Unit 1 and Unit 2.

There is a newly-opened weight room in Bowles.

Check out the RSF (<a href="http://calbears.berkeley.edu/facilities/rsf/default.asp%5B/url%5D">http://calbears.berkeley.edu/facilities/rsf/default.asp</a>) 'Recreational Sports Facility'. But, it is not free to students. I think it costs $75/semester

Or you can take a PE class that meets in RSF, and your fee is waived. The hours that you can use RSF if you're a PE student may be restricted, though.

thanks for the info! =)

What do they have in the weight room in Bowles? How extensive is it, machines or freeweights?

what a messed up school where u have to pay to use its facilities...in addition to the tuition

They make you buy their health plan too even if you're already covered. The gym is pretty cheap though compared to a place like 24 hour.

You can waive out of their health plan.

"what a messed up school where u have to pay to use its facilities...in addition to the tuition"

Actually some other universities already integrate that into the student service fees. In fact, a referendum may soon come up so that Cal will also have it integrated to get it out of the $5 million deficit.

And someone earlier said there are free weight rooms in unit 1 and unit 2.

well it isn't really "free." that's included in the dorm price, and so is the fees to maintain the computing center and all those "free food" events that seem to happen every week.

"The gym is pretty cheap though compared to a place like 24 hour."
Apparently someone I know did not sign up for RSF because 24 Hour was cheaper for him since he has been a member since 11(or what is 14) years old. Crazy...

Unit 1 does not have weight rooms, but several machines for use at no extra charge other than fees, as already mentioned.

I purchased a membership last semester. I never actually used it for the gym, but membership is required in order to participate in Intramural Sports, and I was on an IM Ultimate team.

This semester I bought the almost $70 (?) membership and actually making use of it.

There are free/small fee classes to take: <a href="http://calbears.berkeley.edu/calaerobics/aerschedule.asp%5B/url%5D">http://calbears.berkeley.edu/calaerobics/aerschedule.asp</a></p>

I'm joining one of the sports clubs, which has been really enjoyable. They have squash, raquetball, fencing, etc.

Even if you don't buy a membership, there are University PE classes such as swimming and basketball that you can take. I take a 0.5 unit Physical Ed. Ballet class and there are other dance classes offered as well.

Thanks for bringing up sport clubs! It's really nice because you WILL know all your teammates very well (esp. crew since it's so team emphasized :D :D :D). So if you feel lost and isolated in this big university, you should join a sport club you are interested in to form new bonds.
