Workout? Shopping? Healthy Food?

Hi, guys. I am quite new to the forum.

I was wondering is that places for student to workout new Berkeley? I did a little reserach and found out that there is RSF, where it only costs ten dollars a month? How does it really work? Would any current/past Bears please explain?

What about places to shop? (Big drugstores: Targets, Walmarts to buy necessity; Department stores like Khols?; or even Mall with stores like Forever 21?) How expensive is the standard of living around Berkeley (compared to the area new UCLA)

And Finally, I was wondering about the food in Berkeley. Is it more like resturant-like (UCSD) or Buffet/Cafeteria like. Is it healthy? Any suggestion if we have to go out and grab healthy food?

Thank you very much in advance.

it’s 10 dollars a semester. and the rsf is great, i love it.

very cheap to live here, if you want to shop, might as well go to SF or emeryville, my two fav. places.

There are cafeterias. some are buffet like, some charge for each dish you want. it’s somewhat healthy? there’s a salad bar at cafe 3, but otherwise, the day to day food isn’t especially good.

there are some stores that are vegan, there’s a subway, but other than that, it’s all up to you to not get too unhealthy foods or eat too much.

The RSF is great. They have plenty of treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, and weight machines. I just got into the group exercise classes the RSF offers and its so far so good. If you will live in the dorms, there are also small little gyms there that have a couple of exercise machines.

if you’re living in the units, there’s a walgreens on telegraph right across campus that’s good for almost everything.

for clothes, there’s urban outfitters, american apparel, wet seal, and some others right across campus on southside. but if you really want to shop, 20 minutes on bart to my favorite place in the world - union square san francisco: giant macys, nicest westfield mall ever with a nordstrom and bloomingdales in it and every other store, 3 story h&m, and of course 3 story forever 21:) emeryville’s good but sf takes about the same amount of time and is so worth it.

hmm, u thinking about working out and buying healthy food. you must be in shape. a/s/l?

The RSF is tolerable. It all depends on how you feel about curls in the squat-rack, really. Berkeley is ground zero for the SLOW food movement, if you can’t find healthy food here (e.g., fresh and high quality produce and meat) something is wrong–with you, not the city.

On an unrelated note,

That’s your favorite place in the entire world? I take it you’ve never left California?

haha well my favorite place to spend a saturday afternoon while in school.
there aren’t very many better places to shop though

ditto on union square sanfran!!! The biggest stores I have ever seen in my life!!! Definitely the best place to find affordable and trendy clothes.

24 hour fitness in downtown berkeley is okay, the gym itself is a little dingy but the people are real nice
