Yeah, so while it may not have been the smartest thing to cram five APs into one year along with a brutal honors physics course, the damage is done. For first semester junior year, I will prrob end up with 2 B+s in AP English and AP Calc AB. However, no one in my English class wil have an A and only 2 kids from my calc class will have As. Also, almost everyone at my school gets 5s in AP calc, even with Cs in the actual class. To a lesser extent, the same problem exists with English. My other classes have respectable grades, ranging from an A to sevral A+s. If I end up with fives on these AP exams, how badly will these two grades hurt my transcript, especially if my dream college is Yale?
(Btw, I am currently #1 in my class, with no Bs freshman or soph year)

Puma: are you fishing for compliments or are you really unsure about your single B+?

Neither reflects well on you, if I can be frank.

Either way, he's obviously unsure, and I don't think it's helpful to attack his insecurities.

Look, if I seriously needed to stoke my ego, I would not be doing it in public. I am simply worried about the adverse effects these grades may have on a college's interpretation of my transcript.

wow looks like it's community college for you.....

Not what I expected.....

well, you should probably remove HYPSMC from your list completely, and I would pray alot if I were shooting for any top 25 uni, pretty much anything above carnegie mellon would be a blessing if you got in. In addition top publics like Umich, Cal, UCLA and UWmadison would be high reaches if you are out of state, and even if you are instate for the california schools. This is all provided you get a 2300/35+ and not asian, If you are asian, may god have mercy on your soul. If you get any lower than that on your standardized testing, I would suggest a non competitive big 10/pac10/acc school like ohio state or Ole' miss. You would probably fit in just great at Ole' Miss.

wow. do not mind what these others are saying to you. I think one B on your transcript will be perfectly fine. Just don't get into the habit of getting more of those, or anything lower. I completely understand why you're freaking out. I myself is worried about mid year grades since my grade in Calc is not so hot.

There's no reason to shoot someone down like that. puma0414, I would not stress about it. College admission is based on the culmination of factors including extracurriculars, work, awards, etc. Grades are certainly a major part for schools like Yale, but they are looked at in context of class rigor. A B+ in an AP class is not a bad deal, and I doubt that they would be the sole basis for your rejection (if that unfortunate circumstance should arise). There's really no point in worrying yourself over it, and when the time comes to submit the application sometimes there's nothing more to do but put your best foot forward and offer up a prayer. Apply yourself outside of the classroom as well as inside and you'll be doing all that is really in your power. Best of luck to you!

haha, I could be mean but I shall resist.

my friend got 6 B's and he's at MIT (then again he had USAMO)
my other friend got a multitude of B's and got into Princeton (than again he was recruited)

Okay, nvm I can't really find a good example from my school but that's because it's pretty easy to get straght A's over here.

You, however, are ranked number 1 in your school. It is definitely OKAY to get a few B's. If you look at the Decisions threads for the various top schools, an imperfect GPA is the norm rather than the exception.

okay, basically what I'm trying to say is that one or two B's will not hurt you. If you don't get into (insert top school here), it's probably not bcuz of your grades.

My advice, become more active and participate in stuff and try to attain a few leadership positions in things you enjoy. Also, kick back, relax, and enjoy high school. Don't worry about the B's.

Thanks for the advice!

Read the FAQ mentioned first in my signature, and chill.

yes i would be slightly worried with those kinds of grades if they persist or get worse if and only if you are looking at HYP...if not you should be fine

either way, its just a slightly less than average grade. Grades don't get applicants into top-tier colleges, the other stuff (EC, essays, teacher recs) does. Overall, try not to stress too much, its not worth it. You will end up in the college that is right for you.

Total honesty.

One B+ will not hurt you that much. Seriously.

Okay, sure, it will take one sparkle away from your shine, but it's not something to worry about.

Me=pomegrante!!- Since when is a B+ "slightly less than average"?

It's actually pretty bad. I'd be worried if I were you, 100% serious. As you've said, the majority of applicants have all A's.

I think you might have to drop out of high school.

A B+ might only warrant you enough to get you into a community college.....if even that.

I hear McDonald's gives great benefits. ;D

"Yeah, so while it may not have been the smartest thing to cram five APs into one year along with a brutal honors physics course, the damage is done. For first..."

Puma, why do you insinuate that anything less than an A is "not respectable?" The kind of education and wisdom that life requires is not accounted for by grades or documents.

If you feel you learned a lot, but got a B, (or a D) why care if some elite institution rejects you? If all they care about is appearance, then forget them. Your reason for wanting to get into Yale is probably to satify your or your family's ego.

Sometimes I wonder how some of the people on CC function in real life ^^;

I am at a loss for words...
