How horrible is a B+ for HYPS

On one test in my Honors Physics class I got a pretty horrible grade. Despite all my work to bring it up I am left with a B+ in the class. Everywhere else I have As. What kind of effect will this have on my admission at the HYPS's of the world?

It definitely won't kill you. Plenty of people get into HYPS with some B+'s or lower, and everyone knows honors physics is a hard class. It could be a problem if you come from a relatively "easy" high school, the rest of your application is borderline, and you're trying to sell yourself as primarily a science person.

A B+? Give me a break. It will have little to no impact.

Aahh AP Physics killed my GPA too. That, and AP Calc.
Stupid subjects.
But yeah, I don't think it'll affect you that much. It's ONE B. And a HIGH B at that. Sooooo don't worry!

Okay - cool. I'm a music kid - so if I'm gonna be getting in, it should hopefully be for the music.

Thanks. I guess when you are involved in the college process for so long, you just kind of believe that everything isn't good enough. Thanks.

Oh no. How terrible, 3.98 vs 4.0 :(

lmao no, seriously it's traumatizing dropping from a 4.0 to a 3.98
I've always had a 4.0 but when the midyear report comes around, I'll have a 3.98

All for an 89 in AP English!
grr lol

one B+? Come on, that will have like almost no impact. They are more interested in your overall trend.

A 3.98 might even be better for colleges than a 4.0. This is pure speculation, and I'm not suggesting that anyone ruin their grades on purpose, but a 4.0 kid looks like they might just be coasting through high school without ever being challenged. A 3.98 kid has virtually identical grades, so they look just as bright and successful, but slightly less than absolutely perfect grades suggest that you're taking challenging classes and working really hard to earn your grades.

it won't hurt you.

A single B+ (or even two) will make no difference if the big picture of solid grades, test scores, achievement, and outside activity is solid. Every adcom, and probably everyone on this board, knows many cases where a student worked harder in the class where they got the B than in any other.

How horrible for you. Man, sometimes you realize there's other things more to worry about than getting a 3.98 GPA instead of 4.0

It's so funny but hey, I guess some don't understand it.

"lmao no, seriously it's traumatizing dropping from a 4.0 to a 3.98"

umm. right. super traumatizing

but to answer your original question - i know two people who got into princeton last year with multiple b+s and im pretty sure both had a b too. and they were asian& white . if you have a really hard course load and time-consuming/impressive ECs, they know you may not have time to ace every class ;)

It depends. It depends on the rigor of the class, the rigor of the school, the effect on class rank. If there are a bunch of you from the same school applying to the same schools, and you are the only one with the B+, while the others got A's, well..... On the other hand, if everyone did worse, it would have a different effect.

Also are the schools going to see this grade? Is it a quarter grade? Our school does not show every grade you get. Just ones at set points on a sanitized transcript with no pluses or minuses.

In case you need more anecdotal evidence, I got into Stanford with multiple B+'s, and one of them was in one of the least rigorous courses I took in all of high school.

Sly Si, you are an AoPSer. :)

I didn't know there was a person in the world who worried about getting one B+

Lol.. it doesn't matter much.. unless you have low test scores (sub-2000) and have virtually no EC's.. only then, I'd say no chance.

in my opinion i think you just completely destroyed your chances...maybe you have a chance at a community college?

AP Physucks woo!
