HAAS advice

Hello all, I am totally new to this forum. Just recently found it.
Anyways, i'd like to get some advice from you guys, especially those familiar with HAAS.

Heres my situation: I'm a community college student and i'm nearing the end of my 2nd year. I app'd to UCs last november and my #1 choice was haas, thus my course work was focused on completing their reqs. Found out i got the axe from haas, as well as ucla. I was accepted into ucd as managerial econ, but i still really want to go to haas.

What would you guys suggest i should do now? Should i stay at my CC, spend this upcoming year getting a great internship and get involved in student gov and organizations and reapply next year? or should i go to UCD? Appeal?

I was also wondering if it would be possible if i could go to davis, spend a year there taking the upper division classes that are haas transferable and see if i could transfer over to haas after a year at davis. And does haas accept spring?( i highly doubt it, but not sure)

BTW, my stats were 3.838 gpa. i wrote on the diversity prompt and thought i conveyed myself well. I took all the pre reqs available at my community college (de anza) and will have them all completed by the end of this spring quarter. (currently taking cis class, ewrt1c, lit, and international relations) As far as ECs, i couldn't join any of the clubs or organizations because of my commute to deanza (30 mins from home, financial issues). But i did work , volunteer, and had an accounting clerk position.

Anyhow, what would u guys suggest? i'd really appreciate some constructive insight. Please forgive me if i posted anything wrong, etc, my first time here :)

bump. any advice at all?

I actually know someone that was in your shoes.

He applied to Haas and was rejected. He decided to work for one year in San Francisco and reapplied and got in.

Goodluck

in that one year, all he did was work? Did he take any classes and what kind of work was it? and does that mean he was accepted as junior status, meaning he would be 1 year behind compared to , for example, another student that was accepted the year he was rejected.

i am in a similar situation as you but i really want to attend UCLA instead.

You can reapply next year and meanwhile you can do things to make your application stronger. school, internship, volunteer work, leadership in a club, etc.

I decided to go to UCD managerial econ. I don't want to spend a year off because I don't want to take the risk of not getting in. I want to reapply next year but I will wait to see if I like Davis or if I still want to go to UCLA.

to CaliGuy07, if you were to xfer from UCD to UCLA next year, im assuming you would be taken upper division xferable classes from UCD-> UCLA the apply to UCLA as senior status?

bump, bump

Going to UCD and trying to transfer as an upper division student is not a plan. That won't work at all.

Spending another year developing yourself, updating your resume, etc. can't hurt. Worst case if you get in UCD again, best case you get into UCLA or Haas. If you make it a strong productive year (get some good work experience, etc.) I can't see how it would hurt you in the long run, no matter how things turn out.

Or just go to UCD and make the best of it, which is a good option too.

You have lots of good options, follow your heart, worst case you apply again and get in again to UCD and spend a year making money and developing skills.

Shirokai: The chances of getting into Haas are getting slimmer every year. This year the transfer acceptance rate was in the 5% range, albeit a bit higher for those who completed the prerequisites. If you really have your heart set on Haas, try applying there for your MBA later on. Don't waste another year trying for something that will give you no guarantee of being admitted.

I agree with this. Don't waste a year. But if Shirokai can find something valuable to do during the year, like getting valuable work experience, there's no harm in trying. This isn't a race, there's no prize for finishing fastest.

I suggest working/interning for a year and applying to other institutes as well. Don't put all your eggs in one basket!

Thank You all for your insight and advice,

I'm also leaning towards spending another year at my CC. If i do, during that time i plan on getting a internship, join clubs/organizations (wasn't able to in past) and trying to get a leadership position, and work. As far as classes, what would you guys suggest? I know theres a limit to the # of units for junior standing transfers since HAAS doesn't accept senior standing transfers. Should i attempt to take 1 or 2 classes each quarter, etc.

The reason why i want HAAS is its unique undergraduate program. I also plan to work for a bit after my undergrad studies and i think graduating from Haas would put me at an advantage compared to Davis because HAAS undergrads get so much exposure to top firms, etc.

What do you guys think?

I think you want to do this so you should do it. It's still a longshot you'll get into Haas, it's a longshot for EVERYONE, but as long as you aren't wasting your year, but are developing experience and your talents (and aren't going into debt), why not give it a try?

Does anyone have any stats or info on what sort of exposure UCD man econ majors get? Like stats on which firms ucd man econ majors worked for after doing their undergrad, avg salary, etc.

bump......
