haas or stern

My cousin is a HS senior and applied to Wharton (dual degree - huntsman), NYU Stern, and Berkeley - Haas. He got in out of state to Haas, and also to NYU, although he didn't get in @ Penn. Had he gotten in, it would have been an easy choice, but since he didn't, he's having trouble deciding. His family wants him to come to Berkeley, since my sister goes there and we could take care of him, naturally. Money isn't an issue since it's out of state and NYU is private. The only thing with coming to Berkeley is that you're not guaranteed a spot in Haas, so he's wrestling with his choices.

Any ideas/thoughts?

Both are very good schools.

It depends on him. Does he think he's competitive enough to get into Haas if he gets into Berkeley? If he thinks he might not, best not to risk it.

Is he ok with NYU's quasi-campus? Is he ok with Berkeley's massive size? Did either give him honors/scholarships?

Both are significantly recruited but for different things. If he wants to go into a high-tech company, Berkeley would be better. If he wants Wall Street, NYU would be better. If he wants to go into investment banking, both are enthusiastically recruited from (NYU would have somewhat more diversity though, due to proximity).

It's personal preference at this point.

Hey, I'm kind of going through the same thing. I wanted to apply for NYU, but didn't have the money and I am currently set on going to berkeley. While I'm glad I'm going to berkeley, I see myself more on Wallstreet than in a high-tech company in the sillicon valley or a real estate development team. I hear there are quite a few Haas graduates in Wallstreet. Does anyone happen to know how scarce or common they are? How do people view Haas in places outside of California? I feel like I'm so brainwashed by California and constant praise from people who see Berkeley as the best thing second to Harvard. Somebody set me straight! (or at least give me your bias opinion) haha.

haas. cal is an overall better school than nyu. bay area is also better place to be than nyc, huge gay population. is he gay?

here is my biased opinion, stern is better than haas

haas... u have to wait till ur softomore year to apply. and then u have to ber VERY well qualified

If you are already accepted into the major at NYU, I would pick NYU. I go to Cal and it is extremely difficult to get into Haas undergrad. Let's say you go to Cal and can't get into the Business Major. What are you going to do? You may think that Econ is your backup, but getting into Econ isn't a picnic either as it is a capped major. But if you do make it into the Business major, congratulations because it's smooth sailing from there.

CalX, you're talking about the MBA program and Berkeley's grad programs, which are undoubtedly very very good. However, to call it a much better school than NYU is somewhat of an exxageration. Undergraduate-education wise, I'd say they are pretty equal overall, more powerful in their respective spheres of dominance. I'm not sure what you would major as an undergrad in at Hass (maybe Business Administration?) but at NYU-stern you'd probably want to major in Finance, which is the way to go if you want to work on Wall Street right after graduation.

He didn't get into Haas undergrad as a high school senior, because they don't accept any students until their junior year.

My biased opinion (or MBO) is Stern.

Stern, without question. :D

stern.. no doubt, if you can afford it.. :)

yeah id go with stern.

I turned down Stern to try for Haas

but then again it would have cost like 30 grand to go to Stern and it costs 6 grand to go to Berkeley

NYU has a good Art school, but other than that, yeah, Berkeley wins

If they were equal cost I would probably choose Stern though.
