Haas prospective: Can I take Math 16A-B and then take Math 53/54 next year??

Hey everyone!!
I took AP AB Calc and got a 5 in my junior year of high school.
I'm planning on re-learning some of Calc this summer too.

I plan to apply to Haas in my sophomore year.
Is it possible to take Math 16A-B my freshman year and then Math 53/54 sophomore year?

I WOULD take Math1A-B but apparently, Math 1B is super difficult due to a harsh curve.
I think i'm fine with Calculus and i dont' want to take "stupid" calculus (Math 16A/B), but at the same time, I need a high GPA.

What would you recommend for my first 2 years at Cal, mathwise?

Thank you so much!! I really appreciate any help :)

You can take Math 1B, then take Math 53 and/or 54. Completing either Math 53 or 54 satisfies Haas as far as math goes, so you do not have to repeat Math 1A if you do that.

If you take Math 16A-16B, you will have to take Math 1B before 53 and/or 54, since 1B is listed as the prerequisite for 53 and 54.

Isn’t it true that the prereqs aren’t really enforced for most classes? I think you can take both Math 53 and Math 54 having taken 16A/16B. A lot of ppl take them having only taken Calc AB/BC and do fine(like me).

Sagert: seriously? that would be amazing if i could skip taking Math 1B and go right into Math 53 after Math16! Is this what you did?
I’ve only taken AP Calc AB with a 5, but Math 1B IS labeled pre-req for Math 53. Are pre-reqs enforced?

They aren’t enforced unless it’s a major requirement…but I think you can waiver out of them or something? like some sort of equivalency? idk

Most prerequisites are not enforced. The penalty is that you have a greater risk of doing poorly due to not learning the prerequisite material as thoroughly as someone who took the proper prerequisite course.

Another option if you really want to avoid taking 1B is to just take 53 or 54 (which satisfies Haas for math). It would be a risky idea if you are not very disciplined about self-studying over the summer the parts of Math 1B that you do not already know (see the link to the course outlines in the http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/1305840-freshman-math-faq.html</a> ).

If you aren’t considering a second major or minor that requires the Math 1 series, why don’t you just take the Math 16 series? Haas doesn’t preferentially treat the Math 1 series relative to the Math 16 series, so the only difference between them (assuming you don’t need the 1 series for something unrelated to Haas) is that one’s easier.

For some reason, the OP wants to take Math 53 and/or 54, which list 1B (not 16B) as the prerequisite. Not sure why, since s/he mentions in other posts wanting to take Economics 100A instead of 101A.

To the OP: what is the reason for wanting to take Math 53 and/or 54?

Well, my reasoning for wanting to take Math 53/54 is because I like Calculus and never got the chance to take MV in high school. I’ve pretty much decided to take 53 over the summer, since it’s a class just for my interest.

-I’d rather take Econ 100A instead of 101A because I hear it’s a lot easier.

oh, and I’m a girl :)

**Additionally, I’m hoping to take easier Calc classes my freshman year to keep my GPA up. So, Math 1A + Math 16B?

If you are that interested in math, it does seem odd to fear Math 1B but not 53 and/or 54. Taking Math 53 and/or 54 without completing the proper prerequisites (or committed self-study of the prerequisite material) is probably riskier to your GPA than taking Math 1B instead of 16A and 16B.

Economics 101A is the more math version of 100A. If you like math and are good at it (and will have completed Math 53 by then), 101A may actually be easier, since the instructor won’t have to handwave around some math that would quickly and obviously explain the concept.

Nop, I never took the 16 series or the Math 1 series, but I took Calc BC in high school (Calc AB + 3 chapters of more material). And yeah, I took like 54/53 my freshman year and did swell. So did my other friends. 54 doesn’t really require that much calc.

I am someone that took both the 16 series and 1 series and went on to take math 53. Let me tell you that 16 series math is just ******** math. Math 16B will not prepare you for math 53 at all because it completely skips over some essentials, such as different ways of integration. If you haven’t taken Calc 2 at all then I don’t suggest skipping 1B. And, I didn’t consider math 1B to be that hard, definitely not as hard as math 53.
