Had a rough first year at college. Just want some advice.

Currently I’m at a community college, finishing up on my second semester. I transferred in from my high school (had roughly 3.0 gpa total), and brought 14 college transfer credits at about a 3.7 gpa. First semester I took 5 classes, 2 of which I withdrew from (4 credits), and received F’s for the last 3 (11 credits). Following semester (this one), I took 5 classes again, ended up withdrawing from 2 (6 credits), and I have A’s in my remaining 3 classes (for 5 credits total).

My school lets me retake the classes I’ve failed previously and replace whatever the old grade was with the new one. So I am going to take the 3 classes I failed in my first semester again. However the school says that the grades I originally got will never come off of my transcript, even though they aren’t calculated in my gpa. Also because of all my F’s and W’s, I have 34 attempted hours to 13 passed hours. So I was wondering how that may hurt me when I look to transfer in two years? Also if anyone has advice for how to improve the marketability of my transcript, that would be appreciated.

My GPA is currently 1.86 until the 3 credit class I took this semester is calculated in. The other 2 I took this semester were half semester classes and are already calculated in. (The 34 credits v. 13 passed already includes the 3 credit class I mentioned above.) For some reason the A.P. United States History classes aren’t showing as being credited, but I should have 19 credits total.

Start with the easy part and visit the registrar’s office to find out why your AP units are not showing. It may be as simple as resending your scores.

Alright I’ll be sure to do that. Does having F’s on your transcript that aren’t calculated into your gpa & multiple W’s make it difficult to transfer? Or do colleges not care about Withdraws and F’s if you retake the class?

Each college and university sets its own admissions policy, so sit down with the Transfer Advisor at your own CC and develop a strategy for targeting places that are likely to admit you.

If you get an associates degree first, many universities have guaranteed admission for transfers. Research the universities that you are interested in.

You should definitely continue at your current school (if they will let you.) Retake your failed classes and get your GPA much higher before you attempt to transfer. A solid 3.0 or higher should prove your worth to other schools, but again as others have said, check to see what the other colleges’ rules are for transferring.

Do you understand why you did so poorly in previous courses, and have you taken steps to get past these struggles? If you need help academic help, you must ask for it. And ask early in the course, the moment you realize you don’t understand a concept. Professors have office hours, most schools offer free tutoring, etc. If you have personal/mental issues, there is help for that as well. Make sure you have taken care of whatever struggles are dragging you down before you attempt these classes again. If you do the same thing without correcting the situation, you are most likely to arrive at the same result. And your GPA/transcript just can’t afford to take another hit.

Best of luck to you.
