HADES - what makes them so good?

yeah… but somehow people always come back to the acronyms. We could put a social CC taboo on them, but that’s a bit extreme.

Shun all acronym users. haha

no just be like >8[ at all of them and go all me no likey the acronym…ies lolz

i think the prestige is the best thing about them!!!

we’ve ben thru this before: fit>prestige ; quality of education>prestige prestige~good (idk not = sign :/)

Where is taft or st. george’s? why does everyone always leave Taft out… poor taft

i just like the prestige of going to a hades school you could bascially get into any university its not like a college is going to take a public school student over a boarding school student that goes to a school where they only accept 20 percent of the students who apply and who are in a highly academic and ec’s program that is specifically designed for university preparation.

You can’t get auto-accepted to any university from a bs. It does help but plenty of people get rejected from the ivys each year from bs.

Taft is an amazing school. I love Taft and think it’s one of the best I visited this year.

Which of the 10 schools from the 10 Schools Admission Organization (TSAO) from 1966 didn’t make it into the 8 schools Association started in 1974 and finalized in 2006 at Lawrenceville?

From my view it looks like Taft, Hill and Loomis Chaffee???

Why do you think they excluded those 3? It looks like the 8 schools which now include most of the original 10 plus Northfield Mt Hermon (Andover, Exeter, Choate, SPS, Deerfield, Lawrenceville and Hotchkiss) say they were reformed to dialogue about how to assist one another, so called ‘peer schools.’

Does this mean that the original 10 ratcheted themselves down self-selecting who they thought they had the most in common with? Are the 8 considering themselves the cream of the crop–via peer selection?

I can’t imagine L-C, Hill and Taft wanted to be excluded or “kicked out.” Maybe they can form their own “selective” group of 3 or broaden themselves to include Groton, other St. Grottlesex schools and Governor’s…or other Tier 2 schools, like Kent etc…

Well according to the recent survey by Forbes…Andover was the highest ranking boarding school (#3) with Exeter at #6

I think NMH deserves an honorable mention. Hah, just kidding, I’m just saying that because I have a cool NMH shirt that I wear all the time. Actually, just kidding about that just kidding part, NMH is a respectable school and they have great basketball and wrestling.

I can’t comment on other schools, of course, but I absolutely loved Andover. I got into both universities to which I applied, but more importantly I truly felt that I received an amazing education.

FWIW, I did pretty well in boarding school admissions (got into Andover, Exeter, Deerfield, Choate, Hotchkiss, Milton, and was waitlisted at Lawrenceville), so if you want tips on putting together a successful application, I’m willing to help.

thanks for the insight, spirals. if you don’t mind me asking, what colleges did you apply to?

sprials, can you list some tips for the BS applications? Why do you think u were so successful? Can you place a weight on where you put your emphasis, i.e. grades, SSAT, EC’s? Or is there someother ingredient that you think counts for a lot? Also did you have any hooks, ie. athlete, URM, etc?

You guys really liked Taft? When I went there for a track meet it seemed really nice. They’re really into displaying pictures of their sports teams.

Whatever happened to LvlleJanice who started this thread from 9/09? Where did she or s/d end up? Anyone know?

in retrospect, as a boarding school student it is drastically easier to view the schools in the cirlce, than from the outside. i have many friends at my school who have recently had siblings apply. my friends themselves applied to approx ten schools, and then for their siblings only three. this is because once you’re in the circle you know how other schools and your school operate. and some schools may be deemed “better” than others, but each school has something that makes them special.

first of all, exeter, sps, and andover are in a league of their own. seriously. (if i ranked them in order, i would say 1. exeter, 2. sps, 3. andover) they have the curriculum, faculty, campus/facilities, matriculation, and reputaion that is beyond the other prep school.

i’m not sure who knows this, but forbes recently came out with their top prep schools list, which in my opinion, is completely skewed. it is ranked almost entirely on matriculation. recently, exeter, andover, and sps have had poorer matrciulation b/c good schools that aren’t ivies are assuming we’re their safety school, and ivies are being tougher. we also don’t ofter as many ap courses or ib’s or things like that, and our grades tend to be lower. a b+ average at one of those schools would be an a average at another, but colleges don’t always acknowledge that. the top schools on forbes were ritzy ny prep schools, where, in my opinion ppl have the money and pull to go a lot of places. at my school, many ppl get into their first choice college, but can’t afford to go.
like to see forbes count that.

why do i rank exeter, then sps, then andover? maybe i’m biased. i’m a student at exeter. but i have friends at other schools, and know teachers and parents there as well.
but like i said, you know more from being on the inside, than being an unbiased outsider. sps is WAY smaller than andover and exeter, with a total student body almsot half of the other schools. this makes for a nice, tight student body, but may not provide all the opportunities of the larger schools. bonus: sps has the most gorgeous campus ever! exeter is bigger, with amazing sports facilities. i rank andover third only b/c i know some ppl who have gotten accepted there, that may not be… what i think the “caliber” of exeter or sps. no offense. also, they are our rivals :)

but each school may offer something you want. want religion, scenery and a close small student body? sps. want a great girls crew team and hardcore academics? exeter. whether you’re looking for somewhere close to home, size, fa, sports, academics- it determines your school.

but telling someone from andover you go to hotchkiss doesn’t gain nearly as much RESPECT as exeter. no matter how big a rival.

i’m rarely on cc since when i applied (then i lived on this site!), so if you have any questions for me about school, or the basis for my opinions, inbox me! :)

sorry if this is random but i hate when everyone thinks that if u go to a HADES school you automatically get accepted to an ivy league school. its not true, and its actually kind of arrogant. i mean really you might have shown great academic aptitude at eighth grade etc. , but universities are going to look at what made you a good student for four years. they dont care about your pre high school career. unless you won a noble prize or academy award beforehand. which if you did, why would you even be on cc right now…
