haircuts, shoes, clothes, banks, etc.

Where do students go to buy clothes, shoes, get haircuts, bath products, etc? At Duke, or do they hop on a bus to Durham. Also, are there banks at Duke? (BB&T) or do you have to go to Durham to deposit checks and withdraw money?

And what about dentists if you have dental concerns?

And one more question; are internships usually oncampus during the summer or at the site of the company? Who pays for the travel expenses and such?

? ? ?Can anyone answer these questions? ? ? ? ?

you need to chill out

Everything exists-- Durham isn't in the woods or anything.
Banks: I don't use BB&T, but I do use Wachovia. There's one just off East Campus (short, easy walk) or in the Medical Center (another easy walk). As for ATM availability-- there are ATMs on East and West, so withdrawing money is never an issue.

Clothes/Shoes/Whatever: There's not really clothing stores (other than some chichi adorable boutiques for women's clothes off East) immediately off campus, so if you need to go shopping, there's a GREAT mall nearby (you'd need a car) and Franklin St (Robertson Bus).

Dental Concerns: I only know one person who's ever needed an emergency dental visit. There will be dental services in the medical center and they are available to students... but unless it's a serious emergency, most students just wait until they get home.

Bath products: You can buy toilettries at the campus store. I prefer just to drive to Target to get them (I find them cheaper and I like wider selections) -- and you can buy these on Flex. If not, there's some sort of "drug store" immediately off East.

Haircutting: If you want to go to a Barber, there's a Barbershop underneath the West Union building. I know plenty of guys who go there, and it's on Flex. There are salons immediately off East campus within walking distance.

Internships: Depends on the internship. If you're doing anything through Duke (working at the business school, Duke University Press, Duke Med, etc.) then it's going to be at Duke. Anything through a company will be at the company's offices. If you need to fly there for the summer (say it's in NYC, Chicago, DC, LA, wherever!) you pay for the travel expenses in most cases. Duke may help you get the internship, but unless you receive a grant, they're not paying for you to do the internship. Sometimes the company will pay for travel expenses and room & board, sometimes they won't... it's on you. Sometimes Duke can help you find summer housing-- it generally won't be free housing unless it's an interesting situation. My friend had a summer internship that was non-paid but very humanitarian based, and Duke put her up for the summer with some lonely old lady who's an old Duke alum.

what does its on flex mean?

Flex is like campus cash-- you use it instead of money at campus stores... While food points count only for food, Flex is used for things like books, tshirts, toilettries, haircuts, laundry, etc.
When you set your foor plan and sign up for your Duke Card, you set the amount of Flex you want.
