My luggage is filling pretty damn fast and I want to cut back on certain things to minimize what I have to bring. What kind of stores are near campus (i hear there is walmart!) and will there be buses that take us there? I plan on buying some blank paper, desk light?, shampoo, laundry detergent, some other small stuff.

2 shopping malls
costco
wal-mart
pet-mart
whole foods
lots of smaller supermarkets
numerous liquor stores

and a target, bed bath and beyond, etc

Thats a lot thanks. So will buses be able to take us there and back?

Duke doesn't have buses to stores. You could always brave DATA but you might end up having to take a taxi

Student services at Duke should look into providing bus services to shopping areas on the weekends - many other major universities provide this service. It is especially helpful for international students who usually buy everything they need on arrival to their university.

I would recommend first recommend asking around your dorm to see if any one is heading down there as well (roommate would be a good place to start). Also, use your RA as a resource - they themselves might also offer a ride or the use of their car...or know of someone who can.

And I agree, Duke needs a sort of daytime SafeRide to off-campus locations.

well there is a bus to northgate on the weekends
