Just curious. I must admit, I'm an interesting blend of cultures, but I'm just afraid that the admissions office gets flooded with that kind of thing all the time.

Anyway...like it says in the title, I'm half Korean and half Dominican (Dominican Republic) and I am fluent in Korean and okayish (ahaha) at Spanish.

Would this help me at all in admissions?? Right now I'm looking at Yale, Harvard, Columbia, and Duke and my grades are the usual - all A's - and I have a lot of leadership positions, volunteer work, and my passion is writing, graphics design, and journalism (pretty much the opposite of every Asian...). I write on a teen panel for my local newspaper.

:D haha! this is why i plan on NOT marrying another korean...joking, joking!

i don't know...a hook is something that is deemed special talents, situations, but usually not ethnicity. I'm not sure if the notorious 'affirmative action' applies to you, but i have to say, you have a unique ethnicity.

perhaps write you college essay about the ethnicity/cultural differences in your parents? :-/ i can't tell for sure your chances, you'll have to post the specifics on the chances post.

I'm trying to steer away from the "cultural differences" essay...it just sounds so bland. But maybe I'll give that a go if I can make it humorous? I know the adcoms are probably bored to death with piles and piles of "Harvard Is Right For Me Because I'm a Freaking Genius, Dammit" essays.

Anyway, as for my essay it's probably between that and my experience at the Nat'l Spelling Bee. (NERD ALERT!!! yes, i've read your mind.)

Jonathan K. -
Dominicans are Dominicans. Hispanics. It's an interesting country - I think half of the people there look like whites (I think the correct term is "creole", as in they originally came from Spain, but I'm not exactly sure), and half of the people there look "black" (original natives).

Interestingly enough, my dad is a mix of both "white"/creole AND "black"/native, so he looks Middle Eastern HAHAHAH.

:-/ thinking
OP, i agree. I intend on making my essays witty and humorous...there's way too many essays titled "Harvard Is Right For Me Because I'm a Freaking Genius, Dammit" I think essays should be refreshing, something to reveal about yourself that no one else can even dare to imitate.

for example, one of my essay is about my first (and hopefully last) zero on a science test. This happened when the extent of my english skill was "yes", "hello/goodbye", "no!" and (ready for this?) "Duh!" it reveals strenghth of character because...

I got a 97 on the final exam in that science class (haHA! SUPERNERD alert!)

good luck, wherever you apply to. just don't apply to schools i'm applying, and you'll be out of harm's way. ;)

hapa means "half" in japanese, i think. refers to half asian/half white or other cool descent mix people.

actually...the whites r creoles
the blacks can either be mulattos (black plus white) or mestizos (white plus native) or zambos (black plus native). or they can simply be native...that's very rare. w/e she is half dominican...and that's all that matters.

anyway, spiffystars,
u have a good shot at Harvard, Yale, etc. id say if ur sat score is decent (in ur case above 2250 +), since ur grades r good, ure in (in that case ur multiracial status might act as a hook).

just apply to more schools and see what can happen :P

Hahaha, it probably is wrong. especially if you're on the wrong side of the fence. but universities...they want ~diversity~ and all that, so it can't be too bad.
