half life 2 ,nascar 2006 not a what are my chances post

now that i have got your attention
hi everybody.!
my name is karthikeyan and am a student living in india in chennai. i study in,if not the best, one of the best schools in the country.i am in grade 11 in c.sc in science stream. our system of education is completely different and does not have gpa and all that.
i have consistently done well in school, and have given the may 6 sat. i have done well am expecting pretty good scores.about 750-800 in reading and writing and a definite 800 on math.
i have a long list of extra curricualrs like debates and quizzes . i have made quite a few power point presentations .i have even organised quite a few quizzes.
i have been selected to represent my country at the world school forum this year in australia . will this help?
i want to do computer engineering. i have been coming in the top 5% of my class in computer science regularly.unfortunately i do not have any social service experience with me. what do you think i should do?
and yeah by the way i have done well on the toefl too. expecting 260+
i play cricket(of course),tennis,volleyball(school team for 3 years)
i have won the gold medal for being the all round student for 4 years in a row and last year i won the cash award for outstanding morals and values.i did very well on my public exams too.we in our system do not have options to take the courses we want.it is a fixed curriculum. our standard is much higher
and advanced calculus is mandataory and compulsory. i can tell you that our standard is much higher than those in your country. the sat math is in fact 9th grade level in our country. do you thnk mit will reognise all thsi?

WHAT ARE MY CHANCES A T MIT,cornell,carniegie,brown,caltech

MIT-huge huge reach
Caltech- huge huge reach
Cornell-huge reach
Brown-huge reach
Carnegie Slight Reach

You sound really pretentious when you say that.

And a lot of schools in the US have plenty, if not all, SAT math by grade 9 as well. As a matter of fact, my 13-year-old brother in the 7th grade has completed 90% of all SAT math. It's doubtful that the math level from your country will be especially recognized (and for the record, a great deal of curriculum from US schools you must complete, such as a certain amount of math/science courses, for example, people just often have choices on how to go about completing that curriculum.)

Hikaru says those schools are slight/huge reaches because you're an international applicant, methinks. Your stats, however, a on par.

karthikeyan,

Though I think that you do sound a bit pompous coming in and telling us, "OMG, my school's curriculum is better than all of yours," you probably will have a good shot at any of them.

do you mean far uot of my reach when you say huge reach? i d onto understand but that is what i would presume

karthikeyan,

I think hikaru is just jerking you around.

dear me
i am really sorry if i sounded pompous . i was just a little out of sorts when i wrote that . i am sorry if i offended any of you

Don't take this the wrong way, but if you think you're such a strong student, why not try for an IIT instead?

i am trying.
they dont care a damn abt your ec's or any of your achievements.
they have an entrance exam
6 lakh people take the exam,3500 get throough. they have a 50% qouta on backward classes. the questions need extroordinary problem solving techniques.it is in a way really unfair. you consider me "strong"
bcause of my selsctions or my ecs people don care a damn here.its brute raw marks they need

I think you have a great shot at all those schools according to you're stats. Although being an international may bring you down a bit. You probably are one of the stronger Int's applying i'd say.

thanks a lot i nedded that

Allow me to present an informed opinion. I don't really like replying to these "chances" posts, but I think this thread is a great opportunity to clear up a lot of facts about MIT admissions.

MIT has a quota for its international students, limited to around 5% of all international applicants, or formally defined as 6-8% of the final admitted student body (IIRC, which I believe I do). As a result of increasing application numbers, it may very well drop to 4% admission rate among international applicants.

You sound very cocky. That will kill your application right there. A lot of people come here making big claims that, while true, are not enough to get one into MIT. It's more about the "fit" and the "match" than it is any (relatively) superficial accomplishment. Keep in mind that admission to MIT is a privilege, not a right you can secure and guarentee with great numbers and awards.

Your claims of being ahead at math compared to U.S. students will not help you. Everything is placed relative to the opportunity you had. If a student's school and community didn't offer upper-level math, it will not be held against you. That being said, I am familiar with many U.S. students who come into MIT having taken math through differential equations. Even if your country's standards are higher than the U.S.'s, you are not competing with your average U.S. students.

The deciding factor in any application's history, especially international applications, is the passion you display. Your love for learning, your personal character, everything that would make you fit in here. I would focus on these aspects of your application rather than the fact that you went into upper-level mathematics. Remember, you're in the more competitive applicant pool (by far). Don't blow it by being incorrectly arrogant and making bad assumptions.

My words are far from official, but I did get into (and will be attending) MIT this fall, and I have been offered a place in the admissions office.

Do you need FA?

All admission, including international, is need-blind at MIT.

This means your decision will not be affected by the fact that you're applying for financial aid or need financial aid.

If you don't think you can compete against the best in India, what makes you think the best of the rest of the world is fair game?

While I understand (read: know firsthand) the rigors of the Indian education system, I find it incredibly annoying when students over in India automatically assume they are qualified for things.

You have to realize that we are all products of our respective environments, and that schools like MIT, Caltech, and Cornell have made it their business to know the environments from which their applicants come from. A middle student in India is not much different from a middle student in Wisconsin or Delaware, in their eyes anyway..its all about what you have been able to do with the opportunities that have been given to you.

However, as an international student, I think your chances of getting into MIT are about the same as your entrance into IIT.

Keep in mind that scores of unqualified students take the IIT entrance exams every year, making the process seem much more selective than it actually is, similar to the HYP applications process.

Sounds like the typical Indian attitude.

olo
how do i display passion in my application. since you have got into mit you could tell me ow you did it.iwhat are the ways to display passion? i appreciate your detailed post and have learnt alot
