I was placed in Bailey hall this upcoming year and all of my classes our in either west or east bank. I've applied for a hall transfer and hope i'll be transferred to one on the Minneapolis campus. Does anyone know what my chances are or how many are transferred each year?

I wouldn’t expect them to be great. The U of M has had problems with overcrowded housing, and I know a lot of transfer students who can’t get dorm rooms because everything is full. Bailey isn’t a coveted hall either. Unless you personally find someone who wants to switch, it’s probably not going to happen.

There is free transportation that will take you between campuses.

I was a freshman last year, and I randomly got put in Bailey as well. I only had one class in Saint Paul all year. I tried to switch dorms around the end of September, but apparently the Minneapolis dorms were so full that they were paying kids in straight-up cash to move out so I had no luck.

I’m guessing this year will be similar. Maybe since you’re applying for a switch early, you’ll be better off. I don’t know.

Living in Bailey sucks. Not going to sugar coat it. I wish you luck and highly advise you to be proactive about this because living in Bailey kind of ruins your freshman experience.

I know a couple of guys who lived in Bailey and managed to have a good time anyway. Your mileage may vary.

The good things are that the bus runs often, it is fun to see the animals from the vet school being led around campus and there is also a bus that goes to Rosedale mall in case you want to get a job.

My mother in law who is 85 years old was telling us over the 4th that all the girls in the 40’s had to live on the St. Paul campus. (apparently they didn’t want girls and boys dorms on the same campus!)

I love St Paul Campus. The bus route to Rosedale is #87, you can catch it across from the student center.

I knew a couple people who tried to transfer out of Bailey Hall. Unfortunately, they were both unsuccessful. Both of them got over it and still managed to have a great time. Just enjoy it as best as you can. You can always get a room on the superblock next year as a Sophomore.

This is actually a huge bonus of living in Bailey. If you have money, there’s a ton to do up at Rosedale. We went to midnight showings at the theater almost every week, and there’re a ton of restaurants plus a Target, Dick’s, OfficeMax, etc. retail stores. It’s like a 5 minuite bus ride. Beats living on East Bank and going downtown for everything. However it’s more suburban and not really a college atmosphere at all.
