I was just wondering if transfers are able to get into the good dorms: west, south or east quad. Can anyone who knows shed some light on this?

east quad is NOT a good dorm, avoid it at all costs!

Anyone know if the cafeteria in west quad is better than the one in east quad, cause it was really small with a crappy selection of food when I went there for orientation.

I am glad to hear someone say east quad is not a good dorm. My daughter is at orientation now, and she is not happy with the dorm (east quad), especially the bathrooms. [Also, they put two kids in a single for orientation.] Can anyone compare it to Stockwell, where was assigned for next year? Thanks.

West Quad food is better than east quad's. EQ is known for having a more vegan or vegetarian selection, which means it tastes worse for the more carnivorous students.

Stockwell is an all female hall, i believe, so I havent been there, although I walked past it nearly every day last year. Its location is one of the best on campus. Its right next door to the CCRB, very close to the CC Little bus stop and the rest of campus, and it's also near the hostipal too. There are a lot of singles in Stockwell, and from what i hear, a lot of girls are known to often have their boyfriends visit and sleep over.

can transfers normally get into the dorms of their choice?

^^ No. You have to chose between Hell, Kinda hell, and more than Kinda hell but not exactly hell. I mean, you have to chose between Northwood, Oxford and Baits.

ajw13 and to all transfer students. as a transfer student, you have a limited selection when you apply which you all know.

but what you do is, apply, get your assignment, but don't SIGN the contract. what you can do is do a contract reassignment. if you go on the housing assignment, there are people that post their housing assignments up that they want to give up because they want to move off-campus.

this is DIFFERENT than a room-swap because you didn't sign your contract yet. it'll be difficult to do a room swap because people do not want to trade with a transfer assignment.

there are always people trying to give up their housing assignments throughout the summer.

Transfer students have at least as good a shot at "good" buildings as freshmen. My daughter's friend is tranferring and she was assigned to South Quad. Also, East Quad is not a bad dorm -- this year, it's mostly devoted to living-learning programs and so it wouldn't really be a great place if you're not part of one of these. But next year (2008) the living learning programs will move back to MoJo and East Quad will go back to being one of the most popular dorms. It's a great location and the rooms are a decent size.

They really need to use some liquid-plumber or something on the shower drains, because in the morning during orientation those bathrooms turned into swimming pools

Put down Cambridge House as your #1 choice on the housing application if you are a transfer student. These are the nicest rooms out of any location on campus.... the rooms are old hotel rooms with hge walkin closets, high ceilings, marble showers, etc etc.... There are plenty of rooms so you shouldn't have a problem getting in. And Cambridge is in West quad.......

MightyNick u couldnt be more wrong

^^ well that's what I was told by other posters on here. Care to correct me?

Well I already did, partially... cambridge house is almost all transfer students and it's the nicest housing on campus. there are also other dorms in west quad and east quad for transfers that are nice. Stay away from Oxford and Baites, though...

That's the point. I got Oxford. Unless you do a contract reassignment, you WON'T get any other dorm apart from Northwood, Baits and Oxford. I put Cambridge and West Quad as my first two choices since that's where upperclassmen live, but I did not get them. Those two dorms are for continuing students rather than transfers (unless of course you get someone to do a contract reassignment and have someone willing to take your housing contract, which is rare because most people don't want to live in Oxford, Baits and Northwood).

Still, I'm not too bummed about being in Oxford. At least its not on North campus, and central campus is just a short bus ride away.

You are using one piece of anecdotal evidence (based on your experience) to make these statements...

Just because YOU didn't get the one YOU wanted, doesn't mean others didn't. I chose Cambridge as my first choice, and I got it. I was assigned with another transfer student. I know dozens of people who had similar experiences.

Either you're lying or those people got lucky.

In NORMAL circumstances, transfers WILL get oxford, baits or northwood.

First of all, if you don't get into Cambridge or another nice west quad house, and you don't want to live in oxford or northwood or baites, you can easily choose to live off campus. Why would you want to live with a bunch of freshman anyways if you're coming in as a junior....

Just trying to point out that it's not as bad as Bitter Nick is making it seem, everyone...

haha bitter? W T F?

Why would I want to live off campus my first year at UM? I don't know anyone so why the hell would I chose to live all myself off campus? Sounds like that's what you would like to do you anti-social snob.

And FYI, I'm coming in as a SOPHMORE, not a junior Mr. Know-It-All.

You're absolutely bitter about your housing situation... You're whining about it and telling everyone how awful it is for transfers because YOU didn't get the room selection you wanted.... boo frickin hoo..

and you are calling me a "Know-It-All"? Good one clown... you're making the statements about housing at Michigan when you haven't even started school there yet.

Based on your social skills on this forum I would clearly think off-campus is a better choice for you...
