Halls/ Colleges

Location isn't that big a deal. Willard is as far South as Elder is North (maybe even moreso) and we have plenty of science kids, and frat kids for that matter, and we all do the up-north trek every day and night. Convenience is nice but really anything is doable.

As to the party bit, artsy kids usually hit up the theatre parties...usually held in someone's off campus apartment, you pay $5 for admittance (to raise money for whatever show the party is for), and to gain access to "refreshments." It's a nice way to help out, and they can be absolutely excellent. The best party I've been to this year was a fundraider for the play "Bone"...it was fantastic.

Do I want to dorm with people in athletics if I am playing a sport, or is it better to room with the radio/film/TV ppl if that's what I am majoring in? What dorms are good if I like a social life, but don't want to walk to far?

It is really up to you. There is no "RTVF dorm" (I guess CRC is kinda close to that but I know plenty of people there who are other majors, mostly Medill). If you want to branch out of your athletic group, do so. You will probably end up walking far no matter what as random electives and such will take you to the other end of the campus. All dorms are social in their own right, but the res. colleges will be a little more "clique-ish," I guess. But everyone pretty much just hangs out with the people who live around them.

Live in Plex (Foster-Walker) if you want a single room! Also, don't be fooled by those who say that the social scene there is dead; that's just not true!

It kind of is though :P Plex is only good for singles. And you really don't want a single freshman year...

yeah i was thinking double. What is just a good dorm in general? one that has a cafe? or a TV lounge? or big rooms? what should i be looking for? and what are good thinks to bring besides the obvious. Thank you people!!!

I'm in Medill and am looking at the CRC. Where do those people party?

A warning for freshman selecting dorms, when they ask for your top five, if you put down a dorm that typically does not have a lot of applicants, they will most likely put you there. The most popular dorms each year are usually Allison, Willard, or Bobb. Elder's great for meeting other freshman but there are no upper classman so you might have to work harder if you're looking for a party or getting an in to a frat party.

^ Not true at all. They do it in a fair process, lottery I believe. If they pick your name they go to your first choice, if it's filled, then your second, etc. I had CRC 2nd on my list and CCI 5th- both not very popular- and I got Willard, my first choice.

Well it wouldn't be a complete lottery in that case because if I remember correctly you need to write an essay type thing to get into Willard

How similar is McCulloch to Bobb? Are they practically the same since they are connected?

RE: the essay, if you list ANY residential college on your top 5, you need to fill out an extended res college application. I guess you are right that this could impact the lottery, but it still shows that listing less popular res halls doesn't guarantee placement there.

Bobb and McCulloch are the same building, just with different entrances/lounges. You can go from Bobb to McCulloch from the second floor up and vice versa.

Do most people bring TVs/DVD players?.... what other stuff do people bring..... i heard some people bring bikes- are they good to have? I know a kid who has a futon in his dorm... is that normal to have?

Bikes are good if you have to ride across campus a lot, they really help. A futon will be useless if you can't fit it into your room, so I wouldn't bring that right away. And NU doesn't have cable, so bring a TV if you plan on hooking up NUTV to an actual TV, or if you want to watch movies with a lot of people or play video games or something.

wait, so can you can't get cable in your dorm on campus?

Nope. Antennaes can pick up some basic channels but that's about it... NUTV on the laptops is the only other option.

i just got my housing application things. is it like first come first serve basis? if i really want to live in a certain dorm, should i send stuff in asap or does it not matter

I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter. I don't think ED gets housing pref over RD, and everyone finds out on the same day over the summer.
