Dorm Buildings

Whats up guys, I know many you guys have been accepted to ED, so I guess this post is for reviews of dorms. If any of you alumni could help us out here.

I was probably gonna try to get into allison hall, but im sure there are other choices.

so any reviews would be nice, location, party scene, dining...
Congrats to everyone that got accepted, hope to see you soon

I live in skokie, so im probably gonna check out the dorms this weekend

i heard we've got three major choices for housing. residential college, residential hall, and fraternity/sorority houses.

i don't see much difference between the first two choices. does anyone know what they are and how they are different from each other.?

well, Bobb is the party dorm...most of the dorms up north are located in the frat quads. as an incoming freshman you won't be able to live in the frat/sorority houses, so i wouldn't even worry about those. I highly suggest living in Bobb though :)

Bobb is awesome. If you want the true college experience, live in Bobb. Put it down as your first choice and dont take no for an answer.

but bobb doesnt have a dining area. No?

the dining hall is 25 yards from the front door of bobb. which can seem like forever in the middle of january but still. I could throw a baseball out my window of bobb and put it through the dining hall window

Jisi - I think Allison is a good choice. Its rooms are relatively large and it has its own dining hall. It's not too much of a party dorm, and most of the people who live there are normal. Another plus is that it is on south campus, near downtown Evanston, so it is easy to go to CVS or wherever if you need to get something or want to go out to eat. But I am a "south campus"-type, so I am partial.

wats the diff. between a south campus type and north campus type

I'm sensing some north campus prejudice towards bobb here...:-)

Bobb-McCulloch (two connecting dorms, they count as two different choices on your housing app) is definitely NOT for everyone, but for some people it is awesome. I live in sargent, which is not like bobb; however, it is nice because everyone goes and parties in bobb but it's still somewhat quiet in sargent. Alas, lots of times its TOO quiet with too many doors closed, but most of the girls are social and you can always go talk to people without having to deal with the nasty smell of urine in the stairwells because some drunk guy peed in there, which has happened to be in Bobb. Lots of my friends to live in Bobb, and it is very social as lots of athletes, frat people who arent living in their houses, and just social people live in bobb. It is a good social dorm and I might even live there next year, but there are other options, obviously, besides that. Everytime I have been in there it has been crazy loud, so if you want to study in your room, might not be the best place to do it.

I live in Sargent, as I said, which is the north campus dorm that has the dining hall that EVERYONE north campus eats in, pretty much. I am litterally down in the dining hall for two-three hours sometimes at dinner but that it extreme, normally i do this to avoid studying. Sargent, in my opinion, does have some of the best food on campus and it is extremely fun to go downstairs in shorts, sandals, and a tank top and watch everyone from bobb running over in winter coats, boots etc. Sargent is right next door to tech (for your engineers) and even as a comm major i have managed to have three out of four of my classes in tech because its so close in the cold :-). It's litterally like ten feet away. Of course, this means sargent is FULL of engineers, which is good if you are an engineer and would like a lot of help.

Otherwise on north campus there is Slivka which is the Engineering Res College and is even more nerdy than sargent. It's suite style living and as such, not too social because people are confined to their suites. There is CCI and CCS which are also res colleges. pretty boring also, i wouldn't recommend those. Then there is Elder and Hinman-Lincoln which are both all freshman. Elder has a dining hall that is okay, good sandwiches, not as popular as sarge because its smaller, and is across the main street on campus and its annoying to dodge cars to go eat. Elder is a fun dorm also, if you want to live with all freshman. there are pros and cons to that also.

South Campus: Allison and Willard are the two most popular dorms. Allison is a big dorm with a dining hall, and if i live south next year i would live in allison. It's probably the most normal out of all the south campus dorms. Willard is VERY theatre-ish and incredibly cultish with the wooshack thing. not trying to offend anyone in there, its just a very very very close res college. Shepard is a very music res college, Jones is pretty theatreish and smaller than the first three. If you arent into theatre and want to live south, i'd live in allison. All the other dorms south such as 1835 hinman, 1835 Orington, CRC, are pretty unremarkable, all small dorms that are close.

Foster Walker is in the middle, all singles. If you want a single go for it; but as a freshman it helped a lot in the beginning to have a roommate. NMQ and SMQ (north mid quads and south mid quads) i haven't heard good things about, never been in them though or known anyone in them, but anytime someone mentions them people grimance...

North is with the frat's and athletes, South is more theatreish. Now i am not an athlete nor do I party but i still love north campus because it is social and such. South really is pretty artsty you walk around there and people are singing and acting in the dorm and yeah.

so thats my pretty long lowdown on dorms. i wouldnt really worry about it till you sign up in june or some time ridiculously late and annoying as all your instate friends will already know their dorm choice.

look through the archives of cc and there should be a link to this article that The Chronicle wrote on all the dorms in the Northwestern forum!

Desrts, the food at 1835 Hinman is of much higher quality than at Allison. Ever since they changed management at Allison, the food has been subpar. (Everytime I eat there, I never enjoy myself. I prefer 1835 Hinman or Foster-Walker.)

No prejudice toward North Campus here. The kids I know who live up there (mostly in Bobb or Elder) absolutely LOVE it and wouldn't live anywhere else. Actually, most people I know, wherever they live on campus, believe that the place they live is the ONLY place for them. Don't worry about it too much. I honestly believe that nearly everyone likes where they live, even if it wasn't their first choice. Having a dining hall in your dorm, even if it is a "bad" one, is always good, though. The wind chill in Chicago as of right now is 9 below - and it's only December. If the choice is suiting up in your winter wear to go to another dining hall to eat or eating nothing at all, the later might look more appealing in mid-January. (I'm kidding…sort of)

Tensighs,
I have only eaten in Allison twice and 1835 Hinman once so im not the greatest judge of southern food. Because I live in Sarge, i normally eat in sarge. if i want to meet someone down south for lunch or dinner i eat in "the good side" of plex. But, yes, allison to me was quite a dissapoitment after all the prase i had heard. I would only live there next year because it's a big dorm and i like big dorms. 1835 did have a pretty steller brunch the one time i ate there on a sunday. I really just dont get out of sargent much; maybe thats why towards the end i hated everything i was eating!

OK- so is HLU (healthy living unit) a part of Foster-Walker? Does anyone know about it? How hard is it to get a single in a cool dorm as an incomeing freshman? Thanks.

oh yea- pretty sure i want to live on south campus, so how hard to get a single in a good south dorm/res college. Thanks

my brother lived in bobb, now he lives in a frat. He liked Bobb a lot when he was there, though.
