Halstead Co op

Anyone live or know anyone who lives here? I can find no information or reviews on the Co Op. :( The website made it look nice, but after calling found out most was false advertisement. So now I am really nervous about staying there. Any opinions on the dorm? Thanks.

I’m actually going to live there this fall… what do you mean by “false advertisement”?

Halstead is part of the modern super co-op so you won’t be dealing with problems we face in older co-ops.

Have you not had the chance to go for a tour? Maybe you’re coming from far away.
I think it’s a fine place to live. The way the whole structure is shaped is cool because you have that open air plaza in the center. And I hear they have a pretty sweet living room with a nice flat screen tv.

I have not had a tour, I applied from overseas while I was studying abroad so relied on the website that described the rooms. When I called they said that all rooms are different sizes, so you could end up with a really tiny room or a pretty big room. But the website only had two floorplans that was possible, both pretty decent sized. Also the website said the rooms all had the same view, but when I called, that was not true. I also chose Halstead because it was suppose to be quieter and for studious students, yet when I called the people working there they said it was super loud and it was hard to study.

Also you have 90 dollars for parking, yet when I called I was told that they oversell the spots and you might not always get parking. Again, not mentioned in their contracts or website. So I was just curious to hear from someone who actually lived there.

Haha so I guess next time I am going to get advice from past or current residents instead of relying on what they say on their website.

Went to Austin 2 weeks ago and it looked pretty nice from the outside when i drove by it. It seems like it has a great view of the campus also if your on the higher floors. I myself got a room in the pearl st. co-op. Also I have a question about parking, it seems its really hard to find any street parking spaces. Is there like any non UT parking garages that sell spaces for 24/7 parking. UT seems to only offer it for on-campus students

Yah it looks nice on the outside, yet no where can you find pictures of the inside. Mainly because every room is totally different. I do not like paying for surprises. Anyway, am going up this weekend to look at all the rooms. (Though they won’t tell me which room I will get? XD) Oh well.

As for parking…not really sure. Street parking is impossible and you need to pay for it or get towed. I think only UT has parking garages around campus. Also, some of them require you to move your car on game days or they will tow you. Kinda sucks when you are paying for it.

I used to live at Pearl Street -

Yes, they do oversell parking spaces and it is very annoying. And the prices go up every year too. It’s nice having it and finding parking isn’t always a problem, unless it’s late at night or on the weekends. If you see a car without a sticker, freakin send an email out over the listserv and if they don’t move, call towing.

That’s the way the cookie crumbles though. I think there were rumors about parking meters being put up in West Campus. Now THAT would be a nightmare.

And when I lived on campus my freshman year, to have an R permit which meant 24/7, parking (they didn’t guarantee spots either) cost $900 for the year. $90 isn’t nearly as bad compared to that; surrounding apartment complexes will charge a ton too.

I used to live in Halstead!

It can get loud. Because of the open courtyard thing if there’s a party on the bottom floor (there were a few when I lived there) or even something big going on in the kitchen then you can def hear it in your room no matter where you are. But on the other hand, most of the rooms are in little hallway suite places so there’s a door to the hallway and then the door to your room which minimizes noise. But I can’t remember if every room was in a suite or not.

It’s true the rooms are all different sizes. Someone explained why but I can’t remember the reason right now. Some of the double rooms have a wall that separates the room in two halves which was really nice but some of them don’t. I remember someone’s room was INSANELY small but he paid less rent for it.

Unless it has changed the living room (which is called the tv room) IS nice. It’s more like a theater. Someone built this seating couch thing and there’s a huge tv with video games and whatnot.

That’s really weird that the website said that each room would have the same view since the building has four sides facing different directions…

Halstead does have a study room (maybe multiple ones, I can’t remember) and you could also study in the dining room if you wanted but I wouldn’t suggest a co-op if you want to live somewhere quiet.

I don’t have a car so I can’t really comment on parking, unfortunately.

Overall it was okay but I lived there right when it opened so things have probably changed a lot.

Wow thanks Gleeky! That helps. I’m okay with it being loud (usually gone on weekends anyway). As long as my room isn’t tiny! Haha I will see it this week. Your feedback is appreciated though.

And yah, UT Austin has one of the WORST parking situations everrrrr. ;_; I actually got towed once because some jackass trapped me into my parking spot because he can’t park, and when I saw it I decided to wait and see if he would leave and come back later. Turned out he couldn’t get himself out of his parking spot and got me towed. UT’s excuse was that I should have reported him first and it would have been reversed. -.-

Frustrating.
