Hard time getting internships?

I am currently a freshman with a 3.9 GPA in one of the colleges with great business and co-op service programs. Ive already taken business and computing classes, have excel skills, had non paid accounting internship when i was in HIGH SCHOOL and worked for previous 6 months(first freshman college semester)at a fast food place.

From the first day when I got 3.9,I have applied to probably 20-30 positions through Co-op. Out of those I only got 3 phone calls and 1 face to face interview.

I did not get any of those position but thats really not an issue. I WAS ALMOST PROMISED by my professor that if I get anywhere close to 4.0 EVERYONE will want me.

So why out of those 30 applications I only got 3 phone calls and 1 interview? Why more people are not responding?I really feel down right now cause I dont know the reason behind it.Do you have similar situations? Is it because I am a freshman? Honestly right now I feel like college is pointless and because of this stupid recession I wont be able to get a job after 3 more years of school. Please help

“Is it because I am a freshman?”

Probably, yes!

The same thing happened to my D (now a junior at BC). Don’t get discouraged, even though I know it’s hard not to at times. Make sure you have a gameplan in place soon as to what degree you will be pursuing. If it happens to be accounting, and your grades are good, you should be getting offers in another year or two. Keep attending any networking opportunities that come your way. Get some leadership under your belt by becoming an officer in a business-related club next year or the following year. Make sure you also take advantage of any interview labs that are offered and get some honest feedback as to how you come across. Take any negative feedback constructively and know that you more than likely will keep getting more confident and natural at the “rapport-building process”. The next two years are really important to gain some momentum for that all-important junior year, when most of the intern job opportunities are available. Good luck!

many freshman and sophomore at Ivies with 3.9+ aren’t getting good internships in the private sector.

The economy sucks, and there’s a ton of competition.

edit: nevermind

Offer to pay the employer to allow you to work for him/her.

Employers are reluctant to hire people temporarily if they don’t have the ability to extend a full time offer at the end of the temporary employment. The fact that you’ve had three responses and an interview is actually pretty impressive.

Also, to put it into perspective, when I, as a senior, applied for jobs last fall (and I mean full-time careers, not internships), I submitted roughly fifty applications, had eight first round interviews, four second round interviews and two offers. As a freshman with a mediocre GPA, I also applied to about 25 places for internships, and I was declined at every single one (except one … an internship placement service which turned out to be a scam).

In other words, don’t worry.

Future13, do not give up. The recruiting season is still going strong. Continue to check your school’s job postings and attend the upcoming Career Fair. Many companies are more focus on hiring interns this semester compare to the one in the Fall. My son who is a junior now had around 4.0 GPA his freshman year. He did not get any internship offer till late March and that turned out to be the only one. In his sophomore year he also got only one offer in mid February. You just need to keep trying and it is not late at this point. Your competition shall be less now since many juniors have internships lined up already.

Don’t give up…or you can consider some alternative approach: doing an internship in China which is the new land of opportunities…check this: [China Internship programs](http://www.china4future.com).

it really is because you’re a freshman! you seriously have a lot of time left, so you don’t have to worry at all. last year, i applied to 20 internships as a sophomore and got only 2 interviews (thankfully one accepted me). this year, i only applied to 4 and got offers from 2. and those 2 were ones that i was actually rejected from last year! so give yourself some time. it’s pretty uncommon for freshmen to be searching so actively for internships, so you’re ahead of the game!
