I got Harris... how is this hall? is there anything specific that I should bring? I heard the bathrooms sucks so how bad is it really, and how does community bathroom work? do you use coins when doing laundry?

I got harris too! 5th floor, but I know some rooms have private bathrooms, suitestyle like, I wonder which floors have this?

I’m in Dobbs.

5th floor has private bathrooms. I cant even find Harris on the Emory map :/

^^I also got 5th floor Harris. According to Emory’s website, the suite style bathrooms in Harris are on the 5th floor… you can see which rooms specifically by looking at the floor plan.

I found it on the map. Its so far away from everything except the library! :(

I lived in Harris last year, and honestly it’s not as bad as everyone says. The lights are dim, so definitely bring your own lamp. And the bathrooms themselves don’t suck so much as the people on the floor can’t keep it clean, especially on the weekends when the janitors don’t come. Communal bathrooms have 4/5 stalls and sinks, and then a sort of “hallway” part with shower stalls on either side. The stalls have doors and a little area where you can put your stuff on a bench to keep it dry. There are also tubs, but I don’t recommend using them as they tend to be the dirtiest…You can use coins for laundry but really it’s much more convenient to put some Eagle dollars on your Emory Card and just swipe at the machine to pay for laundry.

And yeah, unfortunately Harris is a bit out of the way but it’s SO CONVENIENT for late-night/early morning study seshs at the library. The proximity to the library made it worth it for me because I could easily go grab coffee or food at Jazzmans without going to the DUC. Also it’s the closest reshall to CVS And the hospital…which is definitely a plus if you’re sick and don’t wanna haul yourself to student services, which is all the way across campus…

Do you know if the janitorial services clean suite style as well? I know that at some schools they clean them once a week or so

I got assigned to Harris Hall on the 1st floor… Looks like we’re going to be singing the same song for the songfest =]

Doesn’t it get a little loud b/c of traffic? I mean Clifton Road is right on front of the hall… And especially since its right next to a hospital, ambulances come and go, you know?

how will the bathroom/shower work? I have never seen or been to a community bathroom before

I think the noise level really depends on where you’re room is located. My room was towards the library side so traffic noises weren’t really a problem, and besides that I’ve never heard of anyone complain about noise as Harris’ main problem (that would be the dimness). Honestly I don’t recall hearing many ambulances, just the occasional helicopter. But it’s definitely tolerable.

It’s basically like a normal bathroom except instead of just toilet stalls you also have shower stalls and sometimes bathtub stalls. The showerheads are attached to the walls and you just shower standing on the floor pretty much, so bring flip flops. There’s a bench in the stall where you put your stuff.

how long does it usually take to get from Harris to the food place and classes like chem/bio? are the room super small and smell weird? I’m trying to bring as less as possible so I’m really not sure if I should bring a fridge. do most people bring fridges?

~5 minutes to the main dining hall (DUC) and a little less to get to Cox food court.
7-10 minutes to get to chem hall depending on how fast you walk.
closer to 10 minutes to bio since the bio building is on the complete opposite side of campus. If you’re a slow walker it’ll probably take you around 15 minutes.
The rooms on either sides of the H are pretty standard sized as far as dorm rooms go; the rooms in the middle of the H are smaller. I had one of the smaller rooms and managed to fit a mini fridge. I don’t know what percentage of students had fridges, but all of my friends had one. It’s pretty convenient if you like to buy food or just keep some extra in your room, or if you cook/order take out. If you have a roomie, definitely talk to them so you guys can split the cost.
