Dear entitled
I guess you have convinced me that there is no racial bias at Miami.

So, just an anecdote.

I am a current sophomore at Yale, but I got the Harrison @ Miami and it was definitely one of the options that I considered.

The idea is great--- get to pick classes first, study abroad with a cool professor, not to mention tuition and room/board.

In case anyone is wondering, I'm white and I had a 33ACT, 1400SAT. I played sports, did theatre, and various other ECs in high school.

I had a terrible Harrison weekend. The 'basement sleepover' is a nice idea, but executed poorly. I asked if it was okay to leave and walk around campus (since it was my first time at the college) and was told outright that I couldn't, since they were responsible for us. Really? As 18 year olds about to enter college we couldn't walk around our (possible) future college. Also the activities were somewhat limiting... board games and stuff were alright, but kind of boring.

The dinner was fantastic, they seat you next to professors or people in charge of extracurriculars (in my case mock trial) that are of interest to you. There was a discussion about medical ethics in a small group, and also departmental tours and such.

As far as why someone becomes a Harrison scholar, I have to say all this talk of racial profiling is just stupid. C'mon, seriously? ALMOST EVERYONE IS QUALIFIED.

When I asked the head of admissions why they picked me, he answered "Your essays." So think about things like that rather than making up excuses about why someone else got in because of their race.

So. Anyhow. I ended up picking Yale, but Harrison program is great and I've since been back to visit friends at MiamiU (including some Harrison scholars), who love it.

Best of luck.

I didn't know presenting a statistic argument is stupid, but I live and learn....Since I seem to have been the chief instigator of the argument, in closing, I will tell you that my daughter received an offer of a free ride at University of Michigan (or about 90% free ride ), and a 100% free ride at her school of choice. I am curious how and where some of the other Harrison whiners ended up

shugs - are you the same as Ericsh?
