Harrison Scholars

Hi, so I just wanted to know from any people with experience, what is the advantage of being a Harrison scholar? Is the experience any different from that of any other student? And what of the scholarship? Does it truly cover all expenses to attend Miami?

While I was not in the Miami honors program, I know that Harrison Scholars are the best of the best at Miami. It is the most prestigious scholarship offered by Miami University. Thousands of applicants compete for only several dozen seats in the Harrison Scholars program. The financial benefits and personal attention paid to Harrison Scholars are definitely better than other Miami honors program students. Here is a link to Miami's Harrison Scholars information page. There should be links to contacts should you have additional questions: MU Honors Program Community

If you have been selected as a Harrison Scholar, CONGRATULATIONS!!! It is quite an honor indeed!

Does anyone know if residents of Ohio are preferred in the Harrison Scholars selection process? Seems to me like they are.

iomr, since Miami University is public and receives funding from the state of Ohio, I think it is a safe bet that more than half of the Harrison scholarships awarded go to Ohio students. 62% of Miami students are from Ohio. Since the scholarship covers all tuition, covering the lower Ohio tuition stretches the endowment further. That said, Miami does make sure a certain amount of the Harrison scholarship go to out-of-state students. Although, I have no idea if there is a magic number. The vast majority of qualified Harrison applicants are denied simply due to the small size of the program. Most of the most qualified applicants who are denied from Harrison are typically accepted into the overall honors program.

pvr2u, check your PMs if you haven't already.

The cost of out-of-state Harrison is about double the cost of in-state Harrisons, so I think it's safe to argue that there is some sort of limit on OOS scholarships. However, the distribution of scholarships seems fairly proportional to the applicant pool. I don't know the breakdown of all of the accepted Harrisons over the past few years, but the yields seem to follow the 1/3 OOS : 2/3 in-state ratio pretty closely. Also, there were fewer Harrisons selected this year, period.

If you do not get Harrison, keep in mind that Miami is awarding amazing Merit Scholarship package for qualifying students that keep on growing if you maintain high GPA in college. It might get very close to full ride.
